Hello! First post
Hello fellow Porsche enthusiasts!
This is my first post. I’ve owned a 1983 N/A 944 for many many…
many years now. 11 or 12 or so... it’s been that long. I've always maintained it myself.
Anyway, I put it into storage (under plastic in the garage) 3 years back but had taken it out of hibernation last August after reading about a V8 upgrade. Anyway, I ripped out the wind-up motor (was a little painful ripping out a perfectly good engine) and dropped in a slightly modified 1994 40K mile LT1. I just have a few things left to do and it’ll be on the road. I’m currently welding in my own stainless exhaust (down pipes are a real pain to make)… not much room with the V8 but so far I’ve got it all tucked nicely under the car without anything hanging down…. I’m running dual 2.5 to 3inch out the back.
Are there any other 944LT1 super car owners on here???
I’ve read some threads, looks like Predator has a 944LT1
P.S. Might be on the road this weekend by late Sunday!
So, I’ll have 300HP with 350FP of torque (normally aspirated) and only an extra 170lbs or so of weight. BUT I’ve dropped the AC (which hasn’t worked for about 7 years anyway and I live in New England where it never really gets too hot for too long) so I’ll save some weight there. I may move the battery to the rear, that’ll be another 50lbs or so. I can’t wait…
The sway-bars, transaxle, and brakes may be my next upgrades... I've already purchased a used Turbo transaxle with LS... found a good deal on e-bay.

Welcome to the List,.. You may get some negative feedback on killing a running 944, But if done right I can respect any conversion. Throw some pics at us when you get some... I did not think the LT1 had that much more weight... Live and learn.

Thanks for the “welcome” message. I’m posting that weight from what I’ve heard, I could be wrong. I never fully researched the weight difference. Well, the good thing about me pulling the working motor is that it’ll be available to someone who really needs it once I’ve completed the conversion. I have an almost new 944 N/A radiator with good fans. Someone will need these parts I’m sure.
I’ll try and get some pictures posted soon.

OK, here's the secret code words you'll need to know to survive on Rennlist...
Someone says...
1) You've bastardised the car - translation: I wish I had thought of that before spending $1500 on new belts that were put on backwards and caused a train wreck on the way home from the shop...
2) Buy a membership you cheap scape - translation: I'm all hung up on myself and feel the need to add to my post count...
3) These cars were not meant for drag racing - translation: There are no tracks in my area and I'm jealous...
4) Street racing isn't tolerated here - translation: Well, actually I kinda agree with this one! Welcome to Rennlist!

Thanks for the other "welcome" messages!
Ok, here are some pictures of my conversion. They were taken 5 months ago... car is almost done now. Don't have any newer pictures here at work.

Yeah, really. Actually I'd like some covers that say "944LT1".. valve covers on there look like crap... all part of the cost saving. It's a good powerful reliable fuel injected engine though. I can't wait. The first time I heard the thing growling in the garage about a month ago... I got chills. When you rev it, it winds up sssooo quickly and the sound of the air being sucked in is amazing. Poor little N/A transaxle... I had better try and go easy on it until the car is moving. I'll never be at a loss of power again, dream come true.

Not too conflicting if you think of it this way:
When you dig past the way it looks (no nice looking aluminum valve covers) and you look at the crank shaft, the pistons, the rings, the aluminum metal itself, the injectors, the computer chips, and so on... it's all the same technology... the LT1 is just a hell of a lot bigger, not much heavier, and WAY cheaper to repair. It never even occurred to me to turn my 2.5ltr N/A motor into a turbo when for a few thousand I could have a 1994 fuel injected V8 with reverse flow cooling and the potential to produce an ungodly amount of power if I ever feel like upgrading it years down the road.
And get this... I was putting on, taking off, putting on... and so on... the serpentine drive belt all during the install. Takes 1 twist of a wrench to move the pulley and the belt pops off... can't say that about a Porsche motor. Maintenance is just that easy on the LT1. Plus, it's raw normally aspirated power, power and torque from the slightest press of the gas, no need to wait for it to spool up a turbo.
Anyway, a tuned turbo 944 is a great car, don't get me wrong. But, I wanted a monster . It's not a monster yet... (pretty close) but one day with some slight changes, I can upgrade to 425hp to 500hp without much trouble and that's still without a turbo! Imagine if I decided to supercharge or add a turbo... that would just be too much.
Anyway, this is going to be my daily driver... just want reliability and ease of maintenance combined with a boatload of power.
I'm procrastinating, I need to go finish welding the exhaust.
P.S. DMSOG... I need one of those shifters!!!!!!!!
