One of the main reasons I was against these was because I thought the weight balance was going to be a big issue. But shhiiiaattt only 170lbs?? Should make for an interesting vehicle. Now SC that thing!!!!

Fits in there nice. I love my turbo, but I'm sure this will cross my mind about timing belt time.

Damn timing belt... bane of the 944. I never bought the timing belt tool. When my N/A engine needed a change, I brought it in... so worth it though.

I just read a thread about people loving their Porsche 944... I'm now in mental pain!! I loved driving my 944 for so many years. I've been driving an Escort for the last 2.5 to 3 years and am so close to having my LT1 944 on the road... all of the parts left to make it drivable are in boxes next to me .... must get back to work... it wont be "done" but it'll be "drivable", oh the thought!

I would rather see a 944 converted than parted out. As long as there is no hug scoop and Nascar stickers all over it.

Well... no Nascar stickers on this machine.
Looking at your (meant dmsog's) engine bay with the same engine and the car being the same color is like looking into the future when I have this done... ok, back under the car now!!!

Helstrm, is that car for sale? You'd be saving my liver from some serious pain.
That is stunning!

Whoa. HOOOLD on there. Wait a minute.

Was that OUR John D. extolling the virtues of a water cooled engine??

The air- cooled gods just saw a snowball fly in hell. j/k.

I'd love a ride in that beast.

If I was a purist I wouldn't have 968 mirrors and door handles, but I'd probably draw the line at an engine swap. Then again, I personally think the Porsche engine is the weakest part of the car. Now technology wise - it "was" an awesome piece of engineering in the late 80's and early 90's. However, it took technology to make the car run fast - and techno gismos are very weak links when it comes to longevity. Cubic inches may be old hat, but it seems they work forever.

Ummm - don't get too excited.. In my air-cooled past - I've also owned, restored, wrenched, driven and tracked my 931, 951 (88), 951 (87) and Jen's 951 (86)....

I'm converted already - but just drive what I drive... For me - I love them all. I also appreciate any owners and enthusiasts who share that same drive - front, mid or rear engined

I just emerged from under the car... my garage smells like cutting fluid... my arms hurt from lining up my cut pieces of stainless steel exhaust pipe... it's 10:50PM... but I WILL FINISH THE RIGHT SIDE DOWN PIPE TONIGHT!!

The 944 N/A engine is a fairly weak link in the 944 in order to make it a super amazing car BUT was a fine car to drive and yes, way ahead of it's time overall (Porsche actually experimented with a 6cyl and an 8cyl in the 944 later years but dropped the idea). Maybe they dropped the idea because the car would then compete with their higher priced 911. Anyway, I can't bash the N/A motor because it was just built so well. For a 2.5ltr 4 cylinder it runs smooth and has great torque and power. Great driving machine.

P.S. Check out the 2005 Pontiac Solstice when you get a chance... perfect balance, high tech frame, rear wheel drive, 4 wheel disk, convertible, 18inch rims, high power 177hp high torque 4cyl... Reminds me of the 944 history when it came out minus the convertible, had a little less power, and smaller wheels).

Anyway, babbling... back under the car!

OK.. so I am impressed this post has gone unblasted..

Maybe Rennlist is at a turning point (or not enough people have read this)

I am impressed that anyone can have the mechanical know-how and confidence to take on a huge job like this..

I like the power idea.. but what about the transmission, Brakes and suspension that were designed for 158 hp? How will this car run safely (daily driver?) with out completely upgrading everything? That said, what would the life expectancy be on a monster like this..

Then the whole ethics issue.. yada yada
And you know Ferry P is rolling in his grave somewhere

P.S. I love Matt O's 944S3.. to me that is the perfect Porsche.
