Default Subwoofer - where to mount

Title says it. I just got a decent amp and 18" subwoofer speaker and want to figure out a decent location for mounting in the 951. Maybe under the passenger seat for maximum vibrational value? The girls would probably like it. . .

I'm currently running 4x6s in the front (doors) and have 6x9s in the rear hatch area. The P.O. deleted the 4x6s in the "normal" location by the rear seats and ran the wiring to the 6x9s he put into the "wings" of the rear hatch carpet. It was a total hack-job but I recently redid it and it's reasonably nice now. I'm also getting two more 4x6s to put into the original rear speaker locations. That way I'll be able to run the original setup with the subwoofer and additional 6x9s in the way-back.

Anyway, who's got good suggestions for a subwoofer? I'd really like to use the 18" cone, but would go smaller if I could make the installation more "clean" and surruptitious. Thanks.

Maybe. . . I'd kind of like to have that spare tire available for use though. It saved my *** once! Maybe it'll fit in there in the "dish" part of the rim. I'll check.

No way an 18" sub will fit under the passenger seat. There's too little room down there, and the magnet will not clear. The only real way I can imagine fitting an 18 is getting a short, flat, sealed box from a sub shop for less than $40, and install it in the middle of the hatch. The hatch glass might not like all the bass, though.

I was wondering the same thing. I have a 10" sub and I don't want it visible. It is in a custom box so it might not fit under the pass. seat. Think it will fit if it was not in the box?

I know an 18" will def. not fit underneath there.

18"!? The 944 is suitable for two 8's, maybe a 10 at the most. Definitely nowhere to put it except right in the middle of the hatch. You should probably get a capacitor for that amp as well..800 watts?

I have 4x6s in the stock location and one (eventually two, haven't installed it yet) 8 inch sub in the left rear cubby...built a custom box out of MDF. Invisible when you lay the carpet over it (take off the stiff backing first, of course, and make sure the carpet isn't contacting the sub cone).

What about two 8"s, one in each of the extra spaces between the front and rear seats?

18" Sub!!! That thing is going to push a SERIOUS amount of air! What's the enclosure requirements?

When I bought my car, I still had my old 2 12" Cerwin Vega Strokers from back in the day. I pulled one of my old enclosures (4 cubic feet ported) and set it in the hatch with the two 12's facing the front, put 600 watts on them and whoa...can we say OVERKILL? Not to mention that my hatch glass damn near came off the frame! Took it out the same day...

I've been thinking about making a bass tube with a really nice 10" sub. Something I can strap to the back of the back seat and take out when needed.

18"?? Why not go with a good 10" or 12"? The response you get with that size sub is not very impressive. Fast bass notes sound like one continious note, because the sub just can not move that fast.

Thanks for the advice all. I'll probably consider a smaller cone for the sub since it sounds like the 18" will just be far too large. I was able to pick it up (cone only, no box) for $80 but I can just re-sell it and get a 12" or 10" if you guys think that'll give enough punch. Maybe a rear seat delete with some sort of shelf with the sub. under it? Maybe I could get TWO 18"s that way.

Actually I'm not that ghetto-bangin'. I just want nice balanced sound and right now there isn't enough oomph at the low end. I don't need it to be pimpin' and rattling windows two blocks away, just sound good when I decide to give a little juice to it.

Wow....an 18" is a really bad choice. Try a 10 or no larger than a 12. I'd go with a sealed box too. You will get lots and lots of bass even with a decent 10 in a sealed box & decent wattage. I'd shoot for sound quality over volume...especially since you'll still get plenty of bass with a good sounding setup.

Get something similar to the KLA subwoofer mount in the sidepockets. Why do you want to go so big? Hatch not seperated enough as it is?

An 8 or 10" will be more than fine.

You could look into building a nice enclosure and using it as a cheap home theater sub if you have an amp that'll drive it..

FYI i have a 15" vega HED series DVC... there is no way you are putting a 18 anywhere but dead center in the hatch..you NEED to look at how much cubic space the sub NEEDS.. my sub crushes your guts on the inside, but you can still talk over it without getting loud... its so clear and deep... I can guarantee you you will need a farad cap (atleast 1.0) to keep your other interior electronics from dimming (and your headlights). what brand is your sub? you really really need to just find out how much cubic space unless its a free air sub.. (in my experience free air subs suck) so i would only get something that demands sealed space...
