Default 1990 S2 -- Water Pump Bearing

I replaced the water pump in March 2004 when the belts were done. The pump was new (i.e. NOT a rebuilt unit) at the time. After 14 months (and maybe 10k miles) the pump is making a whirring sound on idle. This was confirmed by my mech today using a long screwdriver as a kind of stethoscope.

I bought the new pump (along with many other parts) from a reputable supplier in Florida and had the parts shipped to Dubai. An independent Porsche specialist changed the pump (+ belts) over here -- not just any mech.

Is it common for a new waterpump to fail in such short time period?

I am going to call the supplier tonight and discuss this matter, but would it be unreasonable of me to demand a new waterpump as a replacement?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks & regards,

Rehan

It should last years longer, but I have heard of rebuilt units going bad quickly. Definetly contact the supplier to see if restitution is possible. IIRC most water pumps have a year warranty and you may be out of luck.
How many miles in this length of time?

Timing belt tension is critical here. Was it tensioned using proper equipment ?

Chris_924S: Since I changed the water pump in March 2004, I have driven the car approximately 10,000 miles -- all street and never abused the car.

tkacki: The shop that did the belts and water pump had the Porsche belt tensioning tool.

Thanks for the quick response! I'd definetly call the supplier and see what they say.

I just sent the supplier an email and will follow up with a phone call later today. I'll keep the forum posted about the developments.

Regards,

Rehan
