Default Hi, new member

I'm a new member, and a new owner of a '86 944. Bought it last month. I sure glad I found this forum, because I want to learn as much as I can about maintaining the car myself. I hope to race the car someday when I can afford a daily driver. This is the fastest car I've ever driven. Sometimes I scare myself, but I guess I'm just not use to it yet. The guy I bought it from said that he had done some changes to the motor, but I don'y know much, yet. I know it doesn't look much like the pictures in the Haynes manual I bought at Pep Boys. I think it has the optional motor. I'm going to take it to a local garage tomorrow and see what they say. It's a VW garage, but someone told me that the 944 had a lot of VW parts, so maybe they can help.

Hi, This forum will save your life. Pay the dues and the money you save and advise will come back to you. The classifieds, and the "search" function are great.

Welcome to porsche ownership. Do you have a 944 turbo? smooth front, or the N/A (Naturally aspriated), metal front bumper.

Hi there, just to help clarify the engine situation in 1986 you had two options either you had a 944 with this engine.

http://www.benlovejoy.com/wheels/944/944-engine.jpg

Or a 944 Turbo (951) which had this engine.

Later non Turbo cars namely the S (from 1987 I think and S2 from 1989) had a variation on this motor.

Anything else under the hood has been converted, hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I'm not sure what I've got, but should know tomorrow. The Haynes book I bought is for a 924, so I guess thats the difference in the way the motors look. Steve PH, man that is a wild picture of your 911. Is that the 4 wheel drive option I've read about? I bet that thing cost a fortune and goes like mad!! WOW.

Yeap that is the difference, the 924 engine is a different unit altogether, but if the book lso covers the 924S then it should still be usefull.

Welcome to Rennlist.

If you need help with your car, there is a guy in Tennessee that sells parts (tod84944). I'm certain he can help you out.

Yowza! What other cars have you driven? Is your car an N/A (non-turbo) or a Turbo? Truthfully N/A cars aren't very fast in a straight line, but fast in the twisties. The Turbo cars are fairly fast in a straight line and the twisties.

There is a 3rd variety, and that is the V-8 swapped cars (usually a chevy SB). There is a guy in Tennessee that goes by the name "Predator" here on the BBS. Maybe if you looked him up, he could give you a ride in his V-8 swapped car. They say variety is the spice of life.

Again, welcome and good luck!

I'm in east tennessee, but I travel throughout the state. My previous car was a '97 Civic, 4 door with a automatic transmission. When I graduated, my Grandmother gave me $20k to buy a car, and thats how I got my 944. Do you have a phone number for this tod944 fellow? I need a front fogg light glass cover. I pulled into my drive today and bumped a flower pot and it broke. Thanks.

Wow! Nice grandmother!
Ouch on the flower pot thing. Thankfully you only need a new lens, and not a whole foglight set up. Send a PM to user-name "tod84944". He can help you out maybe. If you have to purchase new, the going price for them is around $120 for the lens.

I read your other post. Could it be "Lindsey Racing" that did the tuning? Have you given the gas pedal a little "sugar" on that car to see what it has? What color is it?

Yea, my Gran is cool. I think she was the model for the little old lady from Pasadenia. She lives in Nashville in a part of town called Belle Meade. It was her moms home, and she and Pop inherited it 20 years ago. I think its worth a bazillion bucks. She gave my sister the same when she graduated 4 years ago. My car is white with burgundy interior and has some wheels the are "cup 2" or something like that. I remember the guy I bought it from saying that they were expensive. He suspose to send me this build sheet today. I bought a magazine last night called Excellence. Has anyone heard of it. Its got some great stuff in it.
