My First Paint Work! (NO 56k)
I got teh car back yesterday, after taking my old one to the scrap metal yard, got $39 for what was left of it, not too bad. So i decided I would start on painting the car today. WHAT A DAY! THank you first of all to Dan, XSBoost, for all of his advice on painting stuff, it really helped me out alot. I spent the whole afternoon with Nathan, mixing up paint/ spraying, preping, etc. etc. The stuff we painted today came out REALLY well, I still need to wetsand on it, and buff it, but I am REALLY pleased with my first paint job work. I am going to paint every bit of the car over again in bits and peices. hmmm, I wonder how much I should do this coming weekend, it will certainatly go faster this time now that I know exactly what to do. We made a paint booth out of nathan's garage. For those of you that don't think some backyard mechanics can pull off a good paint job, feast your eyes on this!

Prep is the key. . . Which it looks like you've done nicely. I think another key is doing the car in pieces like you're doing. That's exactly how I plan on doing mine. Pull it apart, prep carefully and paint carefully. Very nice job. Make sure to get good pics when it's all back together - I want to see 'em!

prep work took about 2 hours for all of those peices, really could have done a better job, but we were really just seeing what we could do, it came out pretty darn nice though. Need to wetsand out some runs, and get a buffer to a few peices, but I am pretty pleased.

That looks very encouraging for a first effort at car painting. I've been thinking of doing the same. Were Dan and XSBoost helping you in person or is there some threads I've missed on the forum? I would appreciate any general advice on getting started with car painting. I've got the compressor, filter/dryer and a paint gun but haven't yet begun to experiment.

While these links all hold EXCELLENT information, the only way to really learn to paint is to try it. I will do ALOT of things differently next time I try it. I have learned alot of the tricks, lessons, and rules of painting. I now feel like I have a pretty good grasp, but I still need a lot fo practice. For anyone that wants to learn, just get your feet wet, see what you can do...
