Couldn't agree more Carl. I'm going to do my "practicing" on my son's 924 in the next month or two.

What paint did you go with?

Dupont all the way!

Dupont Chroma Base -- (1977 Dale Jarret #88 Red) anyone know why it is called this?? >> it is in fact Guards red!

I got a quart, used quite a bit.

Nason Urethane Primer, Awesome stuff!

Dupont Chroma Clear 7600S, also really nice stuff. -- be careful not to do too many coats, or it tends to run. I was cautioned on this, and I can see why!

Also: Get one of those really good 3M masks like you see me wearing, DO NOT go cheap on safety, this paint is some nasty stuff, and it will mess you up later in life.

If you have any other questions there are much more qualified people to answer them. Talk to Dan (XSBoost90) or any of the other experienced painters. I can't wait to do some more, it is ALOT of fun!

How hard was it to get those fenders off? Do you think it will be a pain to refit them?
Now that I need to do some paint/body work on the front of my car, I was thinking maybe I should take the fenders, hood, bumper, nose panel, and headlight covers off, and bring all the parts to a paint shop? I'm figuring they can strip+spray the parts better off the car, and have no worries of overspray or anything. Or is this just a rediculous idea? I'm unhappy with the paint work done to the front of my car by the previous owner. Now that I need work done in the front, I want to do the whole front over, but save as much money as possible by doing the prep and reassembly. Again, is this a good idea or rediculous?

There's a lot of sealant helping to hold the fenders on so it can be difficult to get them loose. You would want to be sure you got them sealed up again properly too. I would think wet sealant combined with fender alignment adjusting could make for a messy job. And unless the body shop is going to give you a significant discount for bring in the pieces vs. the whole car, I don't think the extra effort would be worth it.

Mello, The fenders are not too bad, especially if they have been off before. If I were you I would seriously consider what you are talking about. Call around to body shops and find one that would be willing to just paint a few peices like that on the side or whatnot. that is that best way to go. If they can just sort of fit them in somewhere it will save you $$$$$. Fenders are easy to align correctly.

Chilix, Thanks for the kind words, I like to share these types of projects with other people, becasue this is the kind of stuff I like to see and read/learn about. Become a member, it realy does have its benefits. Its more than anything a way of giving back a little to this wonderful community.

Very nice Carl. I'm glad to see your car coming along. I'll try to head up there in a few weeks and see it in person, I'm sure it will be impressive.

looking good there carl! im sure the rest of the car will be painted now after this...you didnt paint the fender w/ that piece of trim on there did you? that can cause paint to settle in the edges and flake down the road..sometimes. Always take everything off to paint! Dupont is great, only paint ive really ever used. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! youll be a painter in no time.

At least carl painted both trim peices! The ****ty bodyshop that painted my car only painted the passenger side trim peice.

This is definately inspiring me to do my own paint work.
If the cost justifies the means.. I have a really good and cheap
body shop I can go to.
