Default Difference between 944NA ABS and Non ABS spindles (edited)

Looking in PET, I see the following

944/944S spindle - 944 341 656 05/06 years 87 and up

944 Turbo/944S spindle 951 341 656 05/06 years 87 and up (non M030)

Both spindles use the same hub (951 341 065 06)

What are the physical differences between the spindles? Are the caliper mounts different? or is the spindle re-enforced in some fashion? Can't be that much of a difference as they can both use the same hub.

I have a line on a very good deal on S2 spindles, and want to figure out if it's going to alter the way I have the adapters for my Big Reds on my current NA spindles mounted.

Change is being made due to wear on the NA spindle, not for performance reasons (though if there are any, that's great)

Matt

The mounting holes are spaced farther apart on the turbo spindles, not sure if S2’s are the same. Do they mount with the bolts hole facing straight down? I have a good set of late offset NA spindles that you can have for $55.

edit: (non M030) spindles just have a different mounting pattern. The big changes in strength came with all late offset spindles

The late offset 951/S2 (non-M030) spindles are slightly beefier than the late offset 944/944S spindles. Also, the horizontal holes for the calipers to mount to are spaced differently. This means that the adapters that you have for Big Reds are not going to work. Just get another set of good 944/944S spindles.

Additionally, while on the subject of late spindles, the 951S/S2M030 spindles are beefier yet and have radial mount holes for the S4-type calipers. These are desirable for those wanting to upgrade to the S4 or larger brakes. This means that if you sourced a set of these, you could ditch the adapters all-together and just mount the Big Reds directly to the spindle (as they are radial mount as well). This would be the best solution, IMHO. N/A spindles aren't that beefy, if you stick them next to the M030 spindles you will see the difference. Porsche beefed up the spindles when they went to larger brakes due to the increased loads placed on them.

Tifo,

Didn't want to spend that much on the new spindles, etc. as I'd have to replace the hubs as well. That would be a thousand dollar upgrade when the current ones are doing the job.

Car_Slave - you have a deal - just realized that the ABS ring is on the hub itself. .

ok - last question here.

Does anyone know if there are any differences between an ABS and Non-ABS spindle? As far as I can remember (as the car is in the garage), there is a separate reference sensor (not on the spindle)that picks up the speed off of the toothed ring on the hub.

Does it mount to the spindle itself? Or is there a separate mounting point? Or, do all late spindles have the mounting point if it does mount to the spindle?

Apologies for all the questions on this as the PET seems to be somewhat vague on this.

Looks like ABS cars have a hole in the knuckle to mount the speed sensor. Still can't see any reference to them in PET. Anyone have any more info on these?
