trailering a 944 with a jeep

I trailered my 944-spec on open trailer behind a 98 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L I6.
With trailer brakes it was ok for short trips and flat tows. Never ideal, but got the job done. Brakes were ok if you make sure the trailer brakes worked. Power ok, but a V8 would be much better. Tongue load was managable IF you were careful in were you put the car on the trailer.
Towing the same car on the same trailer with a 8 spare tires on rack and NO trailer brakes behind my father's 2500 V10 Dodge is walk the park by comparison.

I've used my Jeep Cherokee 4.0 ltr to haul various vehicles, including a 944 before. The lighter the trailer the better, good brakes are a must, but its certainly do-able. I am not sure I would want to go cross country that way, but I would think you'd survive.

I tow the 944 with a V-8 Grand Cherokee but even with a V-8 I recommend the upgraded tow package or better, aftermarket shocks, springs, tires, cooling, etc. I actually use the Jeep for pulling Cedar stumps and hauling fairly heavy loads on my Wimberley Texas "ranchette." I've towed my small tractor, etc. which weighs considerably more than the 944. YMMV

Ive done a lot of towing with a standard cherokee. I have the factory tow package which is rated for 5k lbs. So the car on the trailer with a spare set of wheels and tools pushes a bit over that limit. But I have not destroyed the jeep so far. Its under powered, and I try to not slow down once I get it going, and I need a running start for hills, etc...
And I use an equalizer hitch. It made a night a day difference, and I would also consider it almost absolutely necessary to do a significant amount of towing with the jeep. It was around $500, which is a lot cheaper than buying a new tow vehicle. It pretty much eliminated any need for upgrading the springs and suspension.

I pulled my 944 on a U-Haul trailer behind my 98 Grand Cherokee with I6 4.0 1200 miles and had no problems. Between the weight of the car and the trailer I was pulling pretty close to if not over 5,000 lbs.
I would recommend driving with the OD off. Put the strain on the engine not the transmission.
