Question Transmission Shake When Hot?

I have an 85.5 944 and I have noticed a sort of shudder action recently. It occurs more and more as the car gets hot and is only when the car starts moving in 1st gear. When I am at a stop and go to let the clutch out the transmission seems to shake or shutter unless I keep the RPM's about 2500 or so throught the durations of releasing the clutch? It significantly increases when the car is has been run a little while? Do you guys have any idea what this could be? At first I thought it might be engine mounts but would the shaking increase as the car heats up? Thanks for the help.

Mine acted the same way. I think its a sign of the rubber center clutch breaking down. I finally replaced my clutch after the bucking and loud zzzhhh.... sounds started. You can probably be ok for a while yet. Just gently slip the clutch when you get into that mode. Maybe give it a little more "gas" too.

Mine does that too if I'm stuck in traffic for a while.. I don't think it's the rubber donut. I suspect increased temperature at the fylwheel and/or pressure plate surface aggravates it.

Yep, mine does it too on the '88, and its not a rubber center. It was replaced with a Sachs spring unit about 2 years ago.

I'm in the middle of waiting for my 944 to get back. I had the clutch replaced. It worked great, and DID NOT shudder or shake, however I had a lot of play and my porsche tech warned me about wearing the bearings on the transaxle out if I didn't change it since the rubber center was worn and creating play.

So with a perfect working clutch, and just the symptom of play, the center rubber was worn out, but DID NOT shake or shudder.

Sounds to me like the pressure plate is glazed on your car.

I have a spring clutch on the car. What are the steps to remedy a glazed pressure plate? Thanks for the help again.

Mine does the same thing, I just feather the clutch a little more. It could be the torque tube, trans, or clutch bearing, not sure but until something really goes wrong I'm just going to keep on driving until I have a definitive answer. The clutch has 30K on it, not sure what type.

Sounds like you have overheated the clutch. It may get better if you are easy on it. My buddies Z did the same thing for a while then it got better and now the clutch is gone. Good luck.

If I knew exactly what is was I would fix it because it's annoying. But basically it would take far too much time and money to hunt around for the culprit, so I am going to keep driving until something fails. There is also a known issue with 5th gear play, which Porsche never really resolved, there’s some info about it on the board somewhere.

Sounds like your Flywheel could have "warped" slightly....
Or maybee that its got some clutch contamination on it....
The only + best way of overcoming it is to get your flywheel skimmed.....

Im just going through this " SAGA" at the moment......

Andrew, unless it really bugs you, I would just live with it.
