By passing the cooling fan relay?
I think my cooling fan relay may have failed. I'm going to check the relay. The fans only come on with the ignition and the a/c on. Does anyone know if I can run the cooling fans directly from switches in the car? I spent $650 on the car last month and my wife will go absolutely nuts if I have to put more money into it. I've got switches for after market fog lights that would be easy to send 12 volts to fans directly with. Will it cause any harm to do this?

This may be of some use to you. Best of luck.

I'd check the thermoswitch first, then the relay. The switches tend to fail first.

I suspect the two contacts might be fused together. It's the only obviously mechanical part of the relay; once you get the cover off it'll be pretty obvious where it is. Try it, you just might save yourself the 130 clams. Best of luck!

If the fans come on with the A/C on, your relay is probably ok. I suspect it's either the fans switch (even though you replaced it) or the wire between it and the relay.
If you have any electrical skills check my post on how to test the relay. This is for an 85 1/2 and later. Don't know what you have.

Correction. After I looked at my own post, it could be the TS relay inside there. It trips the two relays that turn on the fans. The A/C doesn't use that one. If that's the case, you can run the A/C when it gets hot until you replace the relay.
