Default at long last, it is back

hehehehe god, im as giddy as a little boy on christmas..

yes, my engine came back from Shasta Design today!! It wasnt cheep to have one of the best in the world build it, but it is well worth it.

shasta pistons and cylinders, aluminum oil cooler, full flow oil filter, 288 degree cam (6810-19), solex carburetors, bursch exhaust, k&n air cleaners. estimated power.. well, one engine builder in the 912 registry who gave some sage advice, and dd the cam grind, said he recently built and dynoed an engine with a similar set up and it pulled 127 hp. i would be more than please with that considering stock is 100.

Just for 944 contents sakes, we will be having a cook out most likely next saturday.. an engine install and BBBQ (extra B for beer). Sow is cordually invited of course. id like to do a drive in mid ohio or hocking hills the weekend after if you guys are interested. nothing nuts.. gotta break her in prudently. but a good time can and will be had by all. and now, with out further ado..

new classic and speed parts light weight crank pully with degrees marked.

It's okay. IMO every 10 years of age on the car gives you a 10 hp handicap, which puts you right around the 944!

everything was original to this engine except:

the cam, pully, 1 new head (other was original), p&c, valves, guides, cam followers (and other usual replacement items during a rebuild), full flow oil filter, distributor, oil cooler, air cleaners, carbs, ,manifolds, exhaust (still waiting for it to come back from ceramic coating)

while the carbs, and manifolds were the original set up, mine were replaced by dellortos before i got the car. i wanted to go back to original carbs and manifolds because they ran better than anything else when remanufactured. one of the heads was cracked beyond repair and hense was replaced.

everything was pretty much replaced, rebuilt or remanufactured except the generator. full rebuild.

crank and rods are original, case is original, tin and fan is original, fly wheel is original.

Looks great Harry. I think the Maestro would approve. When I was reading his books he was just changing from webers to dellortos. I was wondering why you were going back to the Solexes. So the Solexes run better, thats interesting. What about the original oil filter? You could save some rear end weight with it off of there. Just there for looks now?
Have fun.

well i belive it runs both. either way id like to keep it on for looks. its not a full out race car or anything, so weight saved by removing it would be a moot point.

the problem people were having with solexes were that the block/bushing in the spit shafts would wear. also, the throttle bodies would need machined and a bigger butterfly installed.. thus needing remachined. instead of remachining it was easier to replace with webers or delortos. also they were easier to maintain. the jets in the dels and webers are at the top.. easy to remove, no mess. the solexes have their jets on the side -take em out, a little gas will spill with em. they are a little harder to tune. most mechanics swear by solexes though and some will refuse to work on webers. some feel the oposite way. also another problem with webers and dellortos are that they didnt come with the proper size jets and venturis. also, the bigger probelm with solexes were the early verisions on the 356. by the time the later pII 40's came out, they had fixed the problem areas with them. by the time they came out on 912s, they were much beter carbs, much easier to tune. the spilt shafts can be tuned individually on each port. the solid shafts could not. it will run you about 900 to have solexes remanufactured.

in the end though, solexes are the way to go. they will have a much better range, will run smoother, mechanics are more familiar with them.

Sounds good Harry.
I have two of Harry Pellow's books. ABCs of 356s and 912s and Secrets of the Inner Circle. Are his books worth anything these days? I thought about putting them on ebay or something.
