Also, check the B+ lead...it runs from the alternator to the starter, to the battery Positive...
I didn't tighten the wire connection on the starter all that tight, it caused me to toast an alternator and kill a battery... I was confused the whole time, and more confused when a new alternator didn't fix my problem. then one day, I was crawling around with a wrench, tightening all grounds and connections, and I saw that was loose. went in and tightened that up, and BAM. never had a problem since.

I'll second what Geoff wrote. Clean the grounds and check that positive line running from the alt to the starter. There is also a thin blue exciter wire attached to the alt. Make sure it is making good contact, as it "tells" the alt when to send out juice to the battery.
