I want to lighten up my stock flywheel a little bit and I was wondering where the best place to take weight off the wheel would be. On my bathroom scale the wheel weighs about 17 pounds and I was hoping to lighten it up to about 12 pounds. I'm pretty sure this can be easily done but I'm not 100% sure where to lose weight on it. I was thinking I could lose a little bit on the back side where there seems to be a little lip where it mounts to the crank. Where else is a good place?

You may have problems with the car stalling at stop lights if you lighten it too much. Look up threads from a user named "KenC" and you'll see what I mean

 

I've always had lightened flywheels, and I've never stalled because of them.

Methinks that's driver error.

 

David how light is that flywheel? Will cutting that much material cause problems with the reference and speed sensors?
I know Fidanza makes lightened aluminum flywheels but I don't really feel like shelling out mad bucks to get one from them. I'll be getting an FRwilks chip to help with the cut out problem so it shouldn't be a big deal.

 

Grab a fidanza on ebay for $300 I wouldnt call that mad bucks

Well compared the to $50-$75 I was quoted by some local machine shops to lighten the stock wheel it is quite a bit higher. I think the fidanza wheel is around 8 lbs and I've driven a car with one and didn't like it quite that light..

 

8lbs on my bathroom scale, no problems with the sensors. these are turbo flywheels in the picture, N/A's are a little different so I can't say for sure how much you can take off.

 

The alloy N/A Fidanza wheel is 6 lbs. in their catalog. Wheee!

 

what are you hoping to achieve by lightening the flywheel ?

 

Not a heck of a lot, maybe just a little faster revving.

 

With faster revving comes the propensity for the RPMs to drop REALLY fast as well. Indeed, you can kill the car (mine used to die often). If you do a lot of driving in traffic I dont think you will like it.

At 12 pounds I don't think that will be a real problem. If I get it done the way I want to I'll be removing mass from the center of the flywheel while retaining most of the mass on the outer edges which will help the wheel keep momentum.
