engine out the top + rod bearing carnage
Finally had a chance to start on the car after last season's engine failure. Just thought I'd share again that taking the engine out the top should be considered if you have the proper equipment - way easier than out the bottom - way safer, too!
#2 rod bearing was expected, but collected a bonus roll with the #3 being completely locked up. Enjoy:

Skip,
That's nasty. How much warning did you get of the impending disaster?
Not often you see all of the copper in a bearing...
What did you remove to get the engine out of the top?

What do you consider "proper tools" for coming out the top? Mine'll be coming out shortly and I'm still contemplating which way to go.

Three Wheelin'
I have taken both my engines out of the top. The thought of having the car three feet in air on jackstands kinda scares me. Now if I had a lift that would be a whole different story.

skip, wow that's ugly. gives me flashbacks......
i'm interested in your "out the top" scenario. i've pulled the engine twice now, both times from the bottom. it's not a lot of fun that way. you had to remove the hood?

buy a decent engine hoist, with some chains of course..... Take the bonnet off (carefully, so as not to crack the windscreen... doh!), and get the radiator out and as much off the front of the engine as possible (as per Skips nicer picture!).

It sounds like you are ready to go Michelle. A hoist, leveler, and chains is what I used for my 44's engine pull. The only real difficult I encountered (other than breaking off a bolt and one of the reference sensors) was getting the engine off of the torque tube shaft.

I'm going to pull the tranny as well so I can yank the torque tube back. I could hoist the car up by the turbo screw in the front, but I'm apprehensive about having it so high in the air.
