1987 944S UPDATED

I am pleased to announce that I just picked up a Black 87 944S w/120K good except for a craked front spoiler and a dent in the front fender (im thinking a bra for a temp fix)
Interior is a 9 out of 10 nearly perfect tan sport seats
***LSD*** woo hoo
Also has forged flat slotted wheels (manhole lids?)
I am new to the 16 valvers so I would like to get some feedback on what I should do to bring it alive again.
I know the car has some electrical issues (however I bought it sight unseen except pics due to the price) so I do not know the extent (needs a couple relays for sure)
The PO is faxing me maint records but he is not "mechanically inclined" and does not know if the T belt has been done, he says the pulleys were replaced so im assumiung the belt was too. I will be checking into that ASAP when the car arrives here
Cam chain on these cars(OHH NOO) I understand has a tensioner known to go bad and was wondering the degree of difficulty to change.
Any other helpful info on a 944S would be greatly appreciated
Could anyone suggest a site to me where I can find technical info about the 944 S. I just picked one up and I am trying to figure out the main differences between it and the late 944.
Also does anyone know if it uses a different exhaust than the standard 944?
i will definitely be posting some pics as soon as this car makes its way to me on a flatbed from Virginia
Thanks
Nathan

Not 100% sure, but i believe the only difference in the exhaust between the 8v 944 was between the years '83-87 which used a small 3-bolt flange, as opposed to later model 944's which used a larger 3-bolt flange. I know the S uses a 3-bolt flange, just im not sure if it uses the larger or smaller sized flange.
Here is a good summary of the 944 series with HP,TQ, Skidpad...etc numbers

Major difference other than an extra 8 valves....is they have a stupid sensor on the power steering pump (bumps the idle up in full turn conditions) is known to short out and fry the engine wiring harness.

i believe the exhaust is different. i bought a straight pipe from sergey who has an 8valve car, but it wouldn't fit on my car because the flanges are different. i don't remember what year his is. the piping is the same 2.25" though.
the head has extra 8 valves, slightly different block i believe. the brakes and suspension are the same but gearbox has slightly different ratios. 188hp stock, 0-60 in about 7.5 sec.

Nathan,
You will notice that your car has a small secondory muffler and the header is different. I got your e-mail for the parts, I will get you some prices and let you know what I have. Is the car that was on e-bay last week in Virginia?? What ever wiring you need, I will have also.
Todd

Thanks Todd,
Yep it is the one that was on ebay. It needs a few minor things mostly cosmetic but I picked it up for a pretty good price.

URGENT!!!!! Unhook the two wires that plug into the power steering pump right away!!!!!
Read this:"The 944S has a pressure switch in its power steering pump. When the pump was loaded heavily, it opens the idle valve extra to help the engine idle smoothly. The switch took +12v straight from the 30 circuit, with no fuse in the circuit. The PS pump switch would fail periodically, grounding the +12v and burning up the harness. On the exhaust side of the engine, there is a long wire with a connector hanging unconnected. It comes from the same harness with two wires that connect to the power steering pump, and extends about 15" further. It has a water-resistant plug and yellow boot with finger pull. This wire provided a signal to DME to increase the idle (actually maintain a constant idle) when the power steering pump was under high load (i.e. steering wheel turned to the lock) or stalled. The high load would drop the idle speed. This feature caused electrical problems and several wiring harness fires. A technical bulletin instructed permanently disconnection. Porsche also issued a recall. The service involved abandoning one of the wires to the PS pump switch and running a new one from the CEB via a spare fused circuit. If this line is still connected, disconnect the switch, terminate the ends with electrical tape, put some shrink tubing on it, and never use it again." I suspect that you have a 944S power steering pump on one car, and a 944 - 8 valve pump on the other. There shouldn't be any problem, as long as you don't try re-connecting that connector!!

PS that air filter will be the fist thing to go. Anyone have a 944S airbox they want to sell me?
She will be here friday, so after I spruce her up a bit I will have more pictures.
