Do all 944's have a gas light?!

I am confused as to my tank size, and how many miles I should get per tank.

I have been filling up when the needle is about to hit the orange, and the car takes about 16.5 gallons at that point.

Can the needle go below the orange? When will the light go on? And is my tank really something like 21 gallons?!

IIRC, when your reserve light comes on its 3gallons of gas left.

Late (85.5+) cars all have a 21.1 gallon tank. The reserve light should come on when you have about 2 gallons left.

I always run it to the light. The needle is just a guess.

"I am confused as to my tank size, and how many miles I should get per tank."

I think it's the '87+ cars that had 21 gallon tanks. The '86 951 was listed as 18-gallons and I took a look at the difference. The 21-gallon tanks have two saddles bags that hang over the tranny, while the 18-gallon only has one. I'm planning on putting a 21 gal tank in soon. Should be able to give me a 500 miles+ range... I've seen guys in C5 Corvettes fill up THREE times in a single track day! I get by with using maybe 1/2 a tank... heh, heh...

"when that light comes on you have about 50 miles left. "

Yeah, with freeway driving only. If I'm running around town, I get maybe 30-35 max.

Really? I seem to only be able to put 13 gallons at most in my 86' 944 before the pump automatically stops. Isn't a 21.1 gallon tank excessive anyways?

I usually fill up at 1/4 tank in all my cars because once you get down to 1/4 tank, the needle begins the Forbidden Dance. On one road it looks like you have 3/8 of a tank, then when you get on the highway it looks like its below E. Then when you get off the highway you have 1/4 tank.

Does anyone else do the stereoscopic gas gauge stare? You start taking different vantagepoint angles to the gas gauge to see if you really have more than you think you do. Perhaps looking from below the steering column the angle will make it look like you have 3/8 a tank and not 1/4, leaving you to deduce, "Whoa, maybe I CAN make it!"

the connector for the lite, near the sender has to be connected and the bulb has to be good.
if you ground the warning lite wire to the tank, the lite should come on with the key on.

in the '84, i had a bad bulb and the wire wasn't connected and i sucked so much garbage into the filter that it had to be changed, didn't run out of gas though.

i wouldn't bet the ranch on having 3 gal when the lite comes on.

I am filling up when I get to 1/4 tank at 2.69-2.90 a gallon for premium here in the Seattle aera its pretty expensive to fill up. My dad was shocked that it cost me more monry to fill uo my car at a 1/4 tank then it does for his 98 Chevy 1500 to fill up from empty(Not by much though)
