Take the MPH/1000rpms figure from my RacerX website there and multiply by your actual RPMs to see how fast you'll be going.
"what does 1st 2nd 3rd etc.....hit at redline"
So for an early NA:
1st = 5.284mph/1000rpm * 6500rpm = 34mph
2nd = 8.952mph/1000rpm * 6500rpm = 58mph
3rd = 13.048mph/1000rpm * 6500rpm = 85mph
4th = 17.762mph/1000rpm * 6500rpm = 115mph
5th = 26.070mph/1000rpm * 6500rpm = 169mph
Note that there's a huge jump going from 4th to 5th gear. About the same as jumping from 2nd directly to 4th without using 3rd at all. I suspect this was a concession to fuel-economy, but it wreaks havoc on performance. A lot of the 944-spec guys are having major problems with such a tall 5th as it kills all acceleration. So they swap in the '88+ gearbox with the shorter 5th gearset from the 951 tranny.
On the other hand, I have the opposite problem with redlining 5th gear in my 951. So I'm gonna swap in the 5th gearset from an '82-87 NA tranny to get a 12% taller 5th gear. This will lower my RPMs at 80mph from 3100rpm down to 2600rpm or so... And I'll be able to redline at 202mph@6500rpm instead of 185mph@7000rpm now..

While we're on this. I just checked my 5th gear at 4,000 rpms based on the chart. It says I should be doing about 92 mph. But in reality I'm only doing about 82 mph at 4,000 rpms.
What gives?
