Default O Rings on Oil Filler Problem

Cann someone fill me in on the famous oil filler seals? I understand this is a common problem.

My car is leaking oil form the drivers side, and running down the entire side an down the pan. It seems to be coming fro right under the manifold near the back.

I thought it might be the balance shaft cover, but I a friend mentioned the o - rings on the oil filler.

Anyone know wher I can find the procedure???

Thanks guys!

I have the same problem on my car right now, its a slow leak, dosent seem to collect much on the driveway where i park my car. This thread may help...

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ing+oil+filler

I plan on taking care of this once i have my car down for belts, waterpump and rollers. Plan to get the injectors done at the same time..not much more work to get the intake manifold off from there.

Could leaking seals here cause excess burning oil at high rpms? I only get it above 4500-5000 rpms. I can usually see a blueish trail behind me. Also noticed i burn about .5 quarts every 500-700 miles of hard driving. I also tend to smell a slight oil-esque (not sure how to describe the smell...could be oil i guess) after spirited runs.

On a 951 this is a big job...the intake manifold/turbocharger/heat shields must be removed to gain access. On a N/A, I'm pretty sure just the intake needs to come off.

951TOM is right. All that stuff has to come off to get to the two o-rings on the "oil separator" as Porsche calls it. One other thing you might look at very closley. I have found on three different 951s where the top port to the motor callapses causing excessive oil pressure on the crankcase causing oil to leak out on the motor and downpipe flange cooking the oil like on a stove and leaking all over the place. This happens a lot under boost! The bad thing is you cannot see any of this untill you removing all of the above, about a 3 hour job just to inspect it. You will also want to get all those o-rings and crush washers on the turbo and exhaust after removing them to do the inspection.

I do have them. I also have used oil separators for sale for $45 or NEW for $92.75. Send me a note if you need them.

Yes thats correct. I just removed one from a 84 944 and it was calapsed as well. So it is not just a 951 thing.

I've got everything off 951tom stated except the turbo. There is a minor leak near the top of the a/o separator on mine. What is the proceedure for pulling off the top? It appears to have a number of grooves that fit into slots on the separater body. I really dont want to pull the turbo at this point with all the other crap I need to finish and getting the top off would simplify installing and routing my catch can lines.

Painkiller, the top isn't removable. If you try and remove it will snap and then won't re-attached properly causing a nice vacuum leak. I replaced mine so I decided to take the old one apart. When I pryed off the top, most of the tabs that go into the slots snapped off. However, if you can manage to take off the top without breaking it, there is a o-ring there.

Thanks Tom, I just may get motivated and pull the turbo and do it right.
