Default Water Pump wont shut off

The symptoms: pump runs when the car is on and off, constantly. The car will sometimes heat up enough to kick on an electric fan while idling and sometimes when cruising at low rpm.

At first I thought it was a thermostat problem, so I dropped it off at my local mechanic. He got back to me the next day telling me the thermostat was fine and that it could be the turbo water pump relay. Soon after I ordered a new relay (951 618 149 00), swapped it out, however it didn't fix the problem. Since then I have ordered a new
Porsche 944 Turbo Thermostat, and have been looking around for some detailed instructions to replace it, to no avail.

Would I be wasting my time replacing the thermostat?

It can also be the temperature sender in the coolant line from the turbo. I had a similar problem, and that was the culprit.

Yeah, check the sensor, but usually they fail in a open position. But if the wiring going to it is frayed, it can get shorted on the bracket next to it and your fans would run forever.

Here is the wire leading to the... ___ switch. Notice how the wires are exposed, could this have something to do with it?

This is the same part on the other porsche (parts car). Would it be of any use to remove that part, and try it in the good porsche?

Or could this be the wiring.

fyi, the reason I don't know the technical term is cause my mechanic was advising me to try swapping that piece.

That is the temp switch/sender that I was referring to. So yes, swap it and see if that solves your problem. It did in my case.

Swapped out the parts in no time with a 19-mm deep socket, took it for a drive.

When I came back, it was off.

Thanks a bunch!
