Default Our AFM is popular!!

I was browsing through this auction on ebay and saw something familiar on the engine!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT

Was the AFM a general use part? I wonder how many other parts are shared across manufacturers....

spooky!!

Funny you bring this up. I was looking at that car a few days back and noticed the AFM as well.

Volvo, Alfa and I am sure a few others all used the same bosch equip, here is another Alfa. I could sware that my 84 Volvo 242 had one as well but I can't find a decent photo.

84 Volvo 242 would have LH 2.2, it uses MAF, not AFM like our cars.

Dmitry, I am not sure. I owned an '84 240 2dr 4spd w button-o/d, the 242's were last imported into the US in '83 and mine was a overseas delivery 84, they drove it there and had it serviced there for first 7500 miles then brought it to the US as a used car.

Mine was I guess one of a few 84's brought into the US. I coulda SWORN that the bosch was JUST like the one in the '83 944. I even remember using silicone to close the plastic lid cause it used to always come loose and bounce around on my belly pan.

I have been looking at pics of other volvos but can't find one with good images.

Maybe it was a MAS but it sure looked damn close!

I think they just look similar. The one on my M3 looks the same also, but I'm not sure that the insides are the same.

I actually went and did some research and I can't frind anything but the circular MAS that he mentioned. I have got to be confusing that with my Alfa. I have to be.

Some jettas and golfs use the same part as well, except the one that the PO had on my car (real hard to figure out why your car is running wrong with the wrong AFM!) was from a 92 jetta, it just had a different high end resistance or voltage or whatever it is.

This is just the same case of AFM used by Bosch in many applications in Eur cars. There are al least 100s of versions of AFM in same case. The differences are: springs, resistor slides and characteristics, intake air temp sensors, etc. They have different Bosch numbers. They are NOT compatible.

I would not make the general statement that they are not compatible. I bought a used AFM off of e-bay that was supposed to be for a 944, and it was actually for a volvo. While the case was different the electonics were the same. All I did was swap the thin film resistor board and the temp sensor into my old case. Car ran great with no problems.

OT- but I love the description for the Alfa- "rust-free (for an Alfa)" - I guess that's like "cheap to maintain (for a Porsche)"

My Supra used the same AFM as well. The calibration was similar to a 944NA's.
