Default Simple maintenance stuff. Yeah right. EDIT: Done. :)

2 goals this evening after work. FPR and Cap and Rotor.

I decided to start with the FPR. It turns out the thing is bolted from the bottom. Not bad, but there is no standard wrench that will fit in there. no way no how. the strap that it bolts to is welded at the top to the fuel rail and the bottom bolts on. (why not a bolt at the top?!?!?). I fiddled with it and just said $%&# it, Ill take care of it when I replace the injector o-rings.

So it was cap and rotor time. I've had the car for a year, and who knows when it was done.

I pull the cap. Looks aweful. Cool. Look at the rotor. Don't have proper size hex key. Go to hardware store. Unscrew's the hex screw. Rotor doesn't budge. Swear. Pry gently. Rotor doesn't budge. Pry harder. Rotor doesn't budge. Move screw driver around. Rotor doesn't budge. Pry gently. Rotor plastic shatters into millions of pieces. Now there is the metal base from the rotor stuck to the cam. Suck.

Its now dark and my driver is inop. It will rain the next 3 days here, so it gets to sit till the weekend.

Ryan

People use loctite on the rotor to keep it in place in case the hex screw comes off.

Personally, I never used loctite.

Don't try changing a clutch if this was major aggravation for you....

not that big of a deal. Just suprising for should-be-simple jobs. Clutch will happen later this spring. I swapped an auto for a manual tranny in my Maxima, so this can't be too tough.

I may not have a lot of answers but I have been wrenching my car for a few years. I have gained a few tools and some experience. I live right aroung the corner at Rt. 45 and Washington in Grayslake.

Feel free to call or ask a question.

MAKE SURE!!! That if you are taking off the copper ring that you get it off without pulling out the rotor shaft and breaking it's attaching screw. Ask me how I know

If you need to order a rotor, for just a few more $'s you can order it w/the shaft. There is no way to order the shafr seperately.

Good luck,

Michael

Man, I just went through the SAME crap last week. I ended up carefully slicing a slit in the copper ring w/o damaging the shaft. After I cut the slit, I popped it off, and the pliers I was using were hurting my hands, so I grabbed the rag I had stuffed in the IC inlet to use as a cushion, and the ring flew off........flew right into the IC. That was when I realized it just wasnt my night.......

Since you already have it broken, and only the brass inside bushing remains, try applying heat with a fine point of a butane torch to heat up the loctite to approx. 200 degrees to soften it up so it will come off. BE very carefull how and where you point that heat at. Of course, make sure the little screw is out also. grab the bushing with pliers, heat, twist, heat till it comes loose. Good luck.

Have you removed the 8mm hex bolt that holds the shaft in place. If not, I'd pull that bolt and then separate the brass from the shaft on a workbench -- using a vicevice grips, dremmel or whatever it takes.

Yeah........I try to be very careful about WHERE I use it too! I for one, won't use it here. To much of a pita to deal with it on a routine maintenance basis. I sure don't plan on leaving the rotor on there for ever.

Stupid question, but where can you get the shaft adapter?
Just curious.. since every car seems to come with a rotor that had the adapter on it, but yet it's not listed in the PET.

If the hex screw came off, you would probably want to know about it anyway - having a random lose piece of metal bouncing around under the distributor cap is not a good thing!

If anything, I use too much anti-seize.

Took off the shaft by removing the 8mm bolt. Used torch to heat it up till all the goop burned out. vise grips got the brass thing off. Its all back together and running better than before.

Did the injector o-rings today too. No more leaking.
