Default Shifter Piece Broken? *UPDATED*

So the local shop (the one I trust ) is doing the clutch replacement for me. They told me while I'm ordering parts that the rod that goes back to the transaxle is busted... Can someone help me out with what that is, and if someone has one I can buy? (seeing as how Ive never taken the drivetrain all the way apart I'm at a loss here).

The rod broke? I've never heard of that. I'm sure someone that's parting their car will have one.

So they broke the shift rod? And you trust them.

Have them fix it as they broke it by not knowing how to remove the trans.

The guy working on my car told me it's the rod that runs from the shifter back to the ssk on the transaxle. They said they pulled everything out and it was all buggered up and they couldnt get it apart so they heated it and couldnt prevent it from breaking. Soooooo does anyone have an extra one of these laying around? The new clutch will be here tuesday and I'd like to have the part by then.

Where is this set screw? On my car I have a bolt linking the rod to the transmission that came loose (car wouldn't go into gear anymore). Should this thing be wired somehow?

The bolt is at the trans, it goes through the shift rod and locates it to the rear linkage rod. The rear part goes inside of the front, the rear peice has a dimple and the bolt is tapered on the end of the threads. Also, the bolt has a bole throught the head of it. the safety wire should go through the hole and loop around the rod and get twisted together tightly. The bolt in question has a 13mm head, prbably marked yellow from the factory.

Sounds like they didn't know that they had to move the shift rod forward to get it out (to clear the transmission) before they dropped the transmission. They dropped the transaxle and found that they couldn't clear the shift rod.

If this is the case, I'd RUN AWAY! They don't know how to work on the porsche. If they can't figure out how to clear a shift rod, then they are incompetent! How many 944 clutch jobs have they done?

If they broke the long (main) shift rod (it's a long tube basically) then they should replace it.

The ssk is a solid bar. They would have to work really hard to break that.

I'm with SoCal Driver. That shift rod is one piece. It doesn't come apart. It is attached to the ssk at the end with a single bolt (safety wired) and at the shift lever at the front (with a clip). They broke it by not knowing how to take it out. If this is the case, they are not competent to do a clutch job on a Porsche. RUN AWAY, and make sure they buy you a new shift rod. These don't break. You can't remove the transaxle without knowing how to remove (and make room) for the shift rod. The factory manuals have the procedure.

I'd find out more.. if they did break it, I'd strongly recommend that you reassess your level of trust in their competence.

Dal.

You can buy a short (or cut one off) hex bolt that size for the shift rod, and grind the tip to a point. That's what I did because my screw was stripped.

*sigh* Needless to say, Ive had my fair share of experiences with shops. I trust this one, I knew this was messed up on my car and on it's way out already. I didnt have the patience to fix it before. They have done LOTS of work on 944's 928's and 911's. They are a euro based shop. I trust them, my friends trust them, etc. I appriciate the concern after my last shop escapade, but I'm cool this time guys. Thanks though.
