Default Took it to the track

Hey guys, Yea so as some of you know i have a 83' 944 and wanted to see what it would do at the track in the 1/4 mile. Now I know since the car is old and nothing has been done to it but basic tune up stuff, so i'm only expecting high 16's low 17's. Anyway I looked up the history and it said somewhere when the car was first produced that it did 16.3 in the 1/4. When i took the car out there, first time i didn't smoke the tires and ran a 17.1 ran it about 4 or 5 times each time doing something different. My final time was a 16.4, WHAT THE HELL, dude if i only lose a 1/10 of a second after 21 year omg, i knew 944's were strong but that is crazy, anyway, just sharing my experience with yall

You won't loose only 1/10 of a second - you will be losing your CV joints too.

Our cars, with the independant suspension in the rear do not like 1/4 mile racing. You will be tearing through CV's quick.

Not trying to flame you, just letting you know the reality.

Excellent times. I really enjoyed the times I've spent at the drags, although I haven't had the 951 out yet. Keep in mind these cars were not meant to be launched at the strip - the tranny's and the joints are not as beefy as needed for that form of racing. Glad you had fun!

Start saving up for a clutch job...

These are not dragstrip cars, but you'll figure that out soon enough.

i know i know i know, but still it almost had to be done, its not like i'm out there doing that every weekend, but i just wanted to see what my baby still had.
my friend once told me "Porsches aren't meant to go fast quick, there meant to go fast for a long period of time" and i hold that to heart, i beat around a little civic if some one wants to race, but on the way back from the track around i-75 no cops around for a good 15 miles, yea me and my boys had a little fun, and i kept up with them the whole way, sometimes even passing them. Hmmmm i wonder going 120 for a good 5 mins if thats good for the car. Oh well, have to start working on it anyway.

No worries. You were just testing acceleration. Nothing wrong with that....just don't make a habit out of it!

16.1...not bad. That's about what you'd expect from a Civic SI coupe (160hp/111tq) with your average, run-of-the-mill driver.

What was your trap speed on that 16-second pass? Which run had your highest trap speed? Trap speed is a better indicator of a car's pull because ET depends so heavily on getting the launch just right.

ie, one car runs a 13.9 sec 1/4 and traps at 94 mph. Another clocks a 14.5 sec 1/4 and traps at 100 mph. IMHO, the "faster" car is the 14.5 sec car, and the other car just launches better off the line.

You still have room for improvments after looking at your 60ft times.. If you slip the clutch in 1st and feather it just anuff to not spin the tires you can get a 2.1 60ft in a open diff car.. The guys with LSD can see 1.9 60ft times. Also when you improve your 60ft for every .1s you usually will see a 1mph gain at the other end of the track. This means that you should beable to get a 15.9-16.0 @ 87ish on a even further improved run.

Sure I'll race you - pick a track, any road course type track. Oh, and you won't have a problem passing a tech inspection will you?

120 mph for 5 min on street in the US.... [stupid]... Sadly it makes doing 1/4 mile runs at the strip look smart.

Seriously guys.

These are not drag cars nor it is smart to go 120 on hwy. It is not so much that a 944 in good shape cannot handle it, but a matter of US road quality, US driver quality, US driver speed expectations, and remember these are 20 year old cars.

Just last weekend I visited California Speedway. In my 944-spec I hit 130-132 (6000 RPM in 5th) and held it for 30 seconds per lap many times. This was in traffic with a car 6" off my bumper in a banked corner. Sure the car was capable of it, but that was on race track.

Guys there was I time did drive a littl fast on street, but believe me... that was not safe back then and is not safe now. If you really want to see what these cars are capable of take them to DE and run a road couse in safe enviorment with proper instruction. Soon you will learn how little you really know about proper driving. It is amazing to me how many times I hear stories like " Car crashed... I took the off ramp at my normal speed and hit the wall! What happend?"

Guys please learn that in the United States the ONLY safe place to drive these cars at speed or anywhere close to the limits is on a closed course. Drag strips in my opinion are closed course and fine, but just remember these cars were never designed for drag race starts so you are putting more wear on drive line. Proper road course driving just serves to wear the tires and brakes down a bit.

Please consider this.. . Oh... if you fine Road Course's too expensive then look at autocross. Sure the speeds are low, but it can teach you the same car control skills and show you the limits of the car in safe enviroment.

Thats the problem with america we ticket the fast drivers not the bad drivers..

If we had better laws in place (Drive Right here in ohio would save more lifes then anything) and strickt action taken against people that cannot drive.
