I was planning on going through my '87 S soon anyway. Water pump died on the way to work, so...might as well rebuild everything. I'm not planning any major mods: A performance grind on the cams and a little touch-up on the ports. Any other suggestions while I'm in there?

How did it fail exactly? What symptoms did you encounter?

What do you want to do with the engine? It might be useful to know that before we answer. Stock or mild build-up or insane build-up? The advice will differ.

The water isn't circulating, so I guess it could be the thermostat, but I don't have that kind of luck.

(also smelled a little rubber - probably the belt slipping over a locked up water pump was my guess)

This will just be a daily driver. The car has over 200K miles on it.

I just did tons of work on my 87 S. FRONT SEALS, BELTS, ROLLERS, WATER PUMP, ETC...
Try to find one of those roller/belt kits on ebay. I got mine for 180.00 all O.E.M. Parts! Did you get the pump from vertex? Dont forget the gasket.......

If it's going to be a daily driver, I wouldn't bother with the cams, etc. You're going to spend a pile of money for very limited gains.

Take the extra cash and put a decent exhaust on and invest the remaining dollars in some track orAX time and keep the rest in the bank for any repairs that come up as needed.

And - don't forget the cam chain tensioner - it's a $5000 mistake if you don't!

Will-do on the chain tensioner.
The cams need reground anyway - might as well put a good one on it.
Also, I'll be doing the work, so no extra cost for extra labor.
For parts, I'm on a pretty good Porsche parts deal (not that that makes anything cheap!!)
Any other tips???

Do you think that cam chain has 200K on it? That's probably got to be changed along with the tensioner.

I got the car from a non P-car dealer at about mile 189K. I was told (and it appears) that the car was always well maintained, but I have no actual records. I changed the timing and balance shaft belts and all the pulleys and rollers soon after I got the car. Everything actually looked really good. Also the chain tensioner looks and feels good...But of course I'll change out the chain tensioner and all the usual stuff. I got the water pump "kit" from Porsche which has new gaskets and bolts and thermostat with it.
