So, as a replacement for my totaled ’83 I get an ’84 from the same guy for 3500 and my wreck in trade (he puts 944’s together, brokering mechanics and body work, as a sideline). Nice car, new sport seats/interior, new paint. Problem is the cam sprocket lunched in the first 100 miles I had it, trashing the cam and valves.
Option 1: the guy I got the cars from has offered a free cam, the entire valve job from hell will thus cost me $1250.00, mostly due to expense of new valves. This going on a 132,000 mile engine. Tranny was a bit noisy, and the gear shift had the usual worn lever.
Option 2: he has also offered me the motor and tranny from the wrecked ’83, free. I drove this about 1,000 miles before being rear-ended, both items tight, no oil use, and they have new clutch, belts, and water pump. Plus it is an ’85.5, reportedly low miles, which it felt like. Cost to swap out tranny and motor: about $1500.00
I’m thinking option #2 is a no-brainer. If I had the time and this wasn’t my commuter, I would tackle it myself no question. Any thoughts about which way to go, or the prices I've been quoted?

i would take what ever the guy will give you for free. You can always pull the head and belts and put them on your 84. Sell the short block and head to recoupe. just a suggestion, put a location and maybe a name in your avatar or sig, helps people that want to offer help.

Thanks for the suggestion, can anyone tell me how to get the "Rennlist Member" (which I am) added to the sig block? This list format is a bit more complicated than the only other one I have joined ( a P1800 Yahoo group). I think I see how to edit to add the location.
