I hear you about the extra HP, but I think that was only due to the compression bump right? 9.7 to 10.2 I think in '88? I will MORE than make up for that with what I have planned, so nothing really lost there if I end up with the '87. The head in either car will certainly be getting ported and rebuilt, with a Millegde cam.
I was going to say neither BUT now I am lost. If you can afford 1K in head work (which isnt going to net you a whole lot) why not just buy a better car to start with?

Tom - Maybe we both have the same high standards? We DO own identical 944's (almost)!

Exactly.

Eyal, Keith, Tom, Matt and Andy have responded to this thread. A lot of experienced people. If the overall response has seemed rather tepid, it's maybe because the collective attitude towards projects is tempered by the realities of costs we've all incurred along our own paths. Lecture over, because there's no point in being a wet blanket.

Personally, I'd keep looking. If you feel it has to be one of these two, I'd go with Tom's advise and lean towards #2, for the same reason he did.

OK Monty, let's ask the lovely Carol Merrill what lurks beneath the hood of car number three.

I understand there are always risks involved...and that's also true with a CHERRY car with a file folder FULL of receipts. It's a car. They are unpredictable by nature. You could have just spent $5,000 buying an '88 951 with 60k miles, a new clutch, new H20, new paint, new everything...the perfect deal...and get T-boned pulling out of the previous owner's driveway. Or maybe a rod bearing decides it wants to dance with the journal, despite $10k in maintenance receipts. I'm one that leans toward the security of receipts too, because it tends to suggest the car was maintained properly...but in my past experience that's just not always the case, as anything can happen, P-car or Honda or Chevy or what-have-you.

I'm not 18, I've been around. (Not that age=wisdom, but you know what I mean-lol). I've had cars that were expensive to maintain. I have an income, I just only happen to be able to afford $3k right this second. Unfortunately, the IRS was not kind this year. I don't have many other bills, and I will be able to afford to sink some money into the car in a few weeks. I am looking for a car that "could use a few things," but not a car that "neds something right this second."

I do appreciate the opinions, but I'm beyond the "buy a Honda, you can't afford it" phase, thank you very much. No offense or sarcasm intended here AT ALL, I truly appreciate all the feedback!!! Rennlist has its on and off days, but as a whole, it's a great forum and you guys are great for helping out.

I'm gonna go check out the white car in a few hours. I don't know what to expect, but at this point, I would feel "OK" with the black car @ 2400. It seemed reliable enough for transpo. Let's see if the white one isn't any better.

Don't even consider an auto->manual swap. The other car should be off the list. I think #2 is not a bad choice.
