Default Badly need advise on getting cheaper insurance

First off, i'm just curious how much you pay a year for insurance?

Get ready to brace yourself, but right now my insurance company wants to charge me $5,000 per year for my 86 944 NA. I'm 22, have a perfect driving record except some BS accident a year and a half ago where I rear ended someone who was driving around in the dark without his lights on and stopped to make a turn without his blinker. Yeah it was still my fault.

Obviously $5000 dollars is basically prohibitive and I need to either sell the car or find someplace that can insure me a lot cheaper. I'm in Minneapolis Minnesota, currently going through American Family. Can anyone in this area point me in the direction of a better insurance company, or just recommend one that you know offers reasonable rates. Maybe this is just the normal rates for someone my age driving a 944, or maybe I’m getting ripped off, but I have a feeling it’s the latter.

Thanks, at this point I need any advise you can give.

19 yr old, I pay around 1000/yr for an "83 944." Liberty Mutual, perfect record. If you're in or graduated from college you might be able to get a "good student discount." Also I only have liability...

Umm, I'm 18, and paying about 1200 a year I believe (just liability). Are you looking at full coverage or liability?

They're jacking you. Shop around. Obviously the insurance companies only see:

- 22 years old
- "at fault" accident within last three years
- Porsche

And it isn't too hard to figure out why they're doing this. That said, I'll bet you CAN get better rates. Shop around. Make the f*ckers fight for your business. YOU are the customer - never forget that.

In general, ditch all the crap like "fire & theft", "collision & comprehensive", "towing", "roadside assistance" and all the other B.S. they like to "tack on". Get a quote for bare state minimum requirements ONLY and go from there. Once you've got something that's reasonable, you can fiddle with different options like theft coverage and lower deductables and junk like that afterwards. The only one I would consider getting for sure even on an older, low "book value" 944 (I'm not sure if your state requires it) is uninsured motorist coverage. That way when some deadbeat / illegal / dirtbag hits you and takes off you'll be covered for some of your loss.

Good luck to you.

I agree you can shop around to find better premiums. One thing you may want to consider, alot of insurance companies offer big discounts for multilple plans/ multi cars. You can check with maybe your parents insurance company to see if they will apply the discount across separate policies.

If you have signifcant assets like equity in a house or alot of cash. You should cover yourself high enough on the liability. At your age you probably don't own jack**** (no offense I didn't either). But I thought I would mention it because some people your age have earned, inherited, or been bestowed with things of significant value. If you don't have anything you can be sued for, go to the min.

Right now it has full coverage, i'm a little surpised at how many people have just liability. That might be the way to go.

Insurance on the Turbo and 83 runs a whopping $274 / year for my wife and I. We have to keep the mileage under 5K each(no problem), they must be garaged (they are), and no one else in the family can drive them (son lost his license for 6 months anyway!). This is for full replacement value at $9500 and $4800 with no deductible comprehensive, and $100,000 personal liablility. Yes it pays to stay under the radar and have a good driving record; being an old geezer doesn't hurt either.

Of course here in Minnesota we have this BS ridiculous no fault crap, which means if you only have liability and get in an accident your out a car, even if it's not your fault.

That "no fault" sounds like a complete rip-off.

I used Progressive for about three years. Between Leslie and I, we had a pair of tickets and one accident for the majority of that time. Leslie was 17 on up, I was 19 on up. My premium was $300 every six-months for PLPD (minimums) and comprehensive. The no-fault catch that you have would make me a bit nervous, so maybe it's better to go with collision as well. That having been said, if you choose not to, I would definitely get comprehensive. That way, with hail, engine fires etc - you are covered.

We are older now (21 and 23 respectively) and are with USAA. We've added about 10k onto all of the PLPD minimums and lowered our deductible for comprehensive and pay about $250 every six months. Progressive became cost-prohibitive when we bought the new GTI.

My premium went from 612 a year in Illinois to 993 a year by moving to Cinci, OH. Same insurance, same company, same coverage, same deductible, SAME DRIVING RECORD.

Poeple around here drive like idiots and its costs ME.
I had "no fault" in Florida- it's much cheaper than standard insurance if it's available in your state.

Minnesota is bad- if you could move to ND it's based on model year not replacement value.

I am on with my family, I do have some records, speeding ticket (I was going HOW fast officer!!), another one to not leave enough room (when I was driving a company CDL truck which had NO damage to either vechile) and just within the last 4 weeks, failure to control (my dumbass fault of going though a turn to quick and spinning the car 90 degrees with an off duty cop behind me, not to smart). I am 22 turning 23 in the end of July pay about 550 for half (so 1100 a year) with full coverage, $500 col. and $0 , yes ZERO for comp. We go though state farm who does our 3 cars and house, so I do know that does make a difference. They are AT least checking out, I pay less or the same as my friends who have POS as cars.

Try progressive.com. Or call them. I pay 1200/year for three cars and two drivers (comprehensive on two, and liability on the 944). Granted, we're both over 30.

I rear-ended someone last July in my 944, they filed a claim. MY INSURANCE DID NOT INCREASE!!! I was shocked, so I'm definitely sold.
