The LS1 engines are quite affordable. Well sort of. If you go with a new crate engine you will fork out 6 big ones. I was following a couple of engines on Ebay and on the LS tech site and $ 2300.00 will buy a 300 hp F body LS. If you go with a kit expect to pay $6000 on top of that to finish the project. If you are handy at fabbing and have time $3000.00 should do it. 2300+3000=one badass car.

I don't mind these engine swaps at all -- as long as they are tastefully and properly done (like Predator's car). But too often these engine swaps come with tasteless unnecessary body mods -- those mods are the true bastardization. Blah...

I'd much rather just put the $5300 into modifications for an existing 951 and get the same end result as if I'd dropped a V8 into the car. It seems strange to me that someone with a 951 would go through the conversion process; I would hope that anyone who did so had a blown engine or something of the like and was going to have to pull the thing anyway. In swapping V8s into these cars, to me all you are doing is essentially "creating" a Corvette.

That having been said - whatever floats your boat. I'm sure these things are fast as hell.

A chevy v8 is BEST thing you can do to a naturally aspirated 944 drivetrain wise. Anyone who says otherwise is not thinking with a cold head.

Amen, brother. I probably wouldn't hurt to add a 951 to the list to.

How is married life treating you there, Magown? Don't take your anger for your own car out on innocent ones

Married life is great, the best thing about doing an LS1 conversion on a "running" '44, Is you can sale the old engine.

Although the NA would most benefit from this, unfortunately it would require (at the very least) an upgrade to the turbo drive train. The NA gearbox won't last long with that motor. So if you do that, you are back into the age old question of 'why not just buy a turbo'?

400 hp with a turbo is expensive and not "real" reliable. 400hp with an LS1 is a cam....

Very impressive design,I wonder what Hood they have for that car.

An ls1 conversion is damn sure a good idea, depending what you want of course.
If you want a 600-700hp street car that will drive just put the engine in,strap a bottle on and your ready to go

I got my LS1 in december for 20k, they threw in the T56 and a 04 GTO body, recaros, Blau, and a three year bumper to bumper in too.

The '05 GTO is a LS6, 6.0 litres and 400hp, thats 50hp per .75L cylinder. My S2 is 3.0 litres and 208 hp. thats 52hp per .75L cylinder. The LS6 doesnt need timing belts retensioned, cam tensioners replaced, etc. Pretty impressive for a primitive pushrod design. I was surprised how smooth my LS1 revs for a pushrod. I was impressed with the LT1 in the mullet, but this is smoother.

I wonder what the torque figures are for both?

I think the next FUN "bastard" car will be the solstace convertible - after someone stuffs a LS1/6 in it! They are using the same hydroforming technology to form the frame that they use for the Vette.

After I get my 944 NA looking good inside and out, the v8 conversion will be next. Power is a very good thing...

then a Cobra is a bastardized AC.
It IS. But is a mighty cool car! For the record, I have driven one a few times and they actually dont driver all that well.

I am going to assume that you have not done this. Not only can it be done for less than a conversion it is just as reliable.

To each his own. The nice ones look good, the "others" (which make up about 90% of them) look like crap. Held together with bailing wire, cigarette butts and Budweiser labels. These can usually be denoted with the excessive use of hose clamps!
