I had that same problem with my '87. I broke a 3/4" breaker bar trying to get the axel nuts to break loose. I even bought an air impact gun, but even that didn't work. I finally took the car to a local Tire Kingdom. Gave them the socket I was using and for $10.00 they broke the nuts loose. I torqed them by hand, and drove the car back home. The rest was easy.

For pulling the bearings, I highly recommend heating the trailing arm and using a bearing puller or a hydraulic press. The bearings are pressed in when the trailing arm is hot, and getting the bearings out and back in can be a real PITA. To make installing the bearings easier, store them in a freezer.

I use a cheap $9.00 24-inch Harbor Freight breaker bar with a 1-1/4" x 36" cheater pipe. Haven't broken a breaker bar or impact socket yet. I used my ample weight to push down on the bar and it was easy. Set the parking brake, chock the wheel, and have someone stand on the brake pedal, it helps.

3/4" ratchet, and a jack handle...a big one.

Sounds like I was very lucky, both cars were about the same. A good PB Blaster soaking overnight was standard of course. When I see photos of the rusty undersides of some of the cars from back east I can see why breaking these parts loose must be a challenge. Even my exhaust bolts are easy to get off...got to love this dry climate out here I guess.
