968 Heater Valve - Blocking Off
Anyone ever built or installed some kind of block off valve for their 968 for track use? I know their a weak point in the cooling system, and my car is pretty much track only at this point so I don't care if I have heat or not.
Anyone have any pics or experience with a solution?

Three Wheelin'
is the valve in the 968 like the ones in the 944 and S2's? If so you can just just a piece of pipe where it is and bypass coolant going into the heater core completely.

An Audi 5000 valve is all metal and an easy swap. It will not break and dump coolant all over your RF tire. You might want heat for defrosting and... heat, but if you really want to block it off you can buy caps for that size line and clamp them on. I have seen them at the auto parts store.

Matt Marks, you want to check out the "brass heater control valve" thread on 968.net. It will have all of the info you need, I will try to get a link to you.

Yes, I use the Audi valve in both my 928 and my S2. The S2 uses the same valve location as the 968. There are no gaskets, you just take out the old inline valve and put the new one in. I used a twist of wire to secure the vacuum line on the valve. The valve is about $20-$30 depending on where you get it. I recall I picked an 86 Audi 5000 as the application.
There is a metal and plastic valve that looks like this:
http://www.partsamerica.com/product_.../FAA/74671.jpg
$18 at Checker/Shucks/Kragen.
And an all metal T shaped one that is a bit more money($26 or so) which I got at NAPA. I thought the all metal jobbie might restrict the flow but it does not affect heater performance. It is cleaner looking than the metal/plastic one.
Update: This is supposedly the all metal valve at Autozone:
"Factory Air Part # 74671,
Heater Valve. All-metal." $18.99 plus tax"
I also have a Belkamp part number, BK 6601410
The Porsche valve is cheaper (!) via mail order but they have been known to crack open on 968's. I have not heard of that failure on an S2 but I did not want to be the first. Even with the novelty of a Porsche part being cheaper than a similar part from Autozone.

Joel,
Found the thread on 968.net. Looks like I'll go with the audi solution or else just remove the valve entirely and have coolant running through the heater at all times - one less thing to worry about.

Running the heater loop might make your feet kinda warm. There is also a manual 3/4" heater valve you can get for $12 or so that would fit in place of the vacuum valve.. You could open it on cold mornings at the track.

Just bypass the heater valve. Disconnect both hoses going into the fire wall to the heater valve and put a coupler in the middle. If you want heat again just remove the coupler and hook them back up to the fire wall.
I have had my NA bypassed like this for quite some time.

The manual valve is a standard auto parts store item. You would want a 3/4" version.

Here is the part number for the 3/4" manual water valve:
Factory Air Corporation #84707
Autozone part #142943
*edit* just checked their website, it'S $10.99 now. That price was from 2 years ago.
