Default R&R Steering Rack: On Ramps or Jack Stands?

As the title says, which is the "proper" method for doing a steering rack R&R? I'm assuming ramps are fine?

it doesn't really matter but it might help to use jack stands since you can take the tires off to get to the tie rod ends a little easier.

I wouldn't use the ramps as the front wheels may twist after removing the rack, and shift the unbalanced car.

But what if I'm going to disconnect the rack at the inner tie rod, while everything is still attached to the car? What size wrench is needed for the inner tie-rod again? 30mm?

Definitely don't use the ramps. You have to have your wheels unloaded. When you disconnect the tie rods, on either end, the wheels would then be free to rotate, and they most likely will, until they reach a limit somewhere. That limit would be the tire slamming into the inner fender, the ball joint cranking against the edge of its range of motion...

Put it on jackstands. Period.

Adjustable wrench won't work as it's too thick to fit in the grove of the inner tie rod. Take the new inner tie rod to the store for fitting, or you may be surprised. I vaguly remember using 1 1/8", ??, but I had to file the edges of the wrench a little, as it still was too thick. I'm sure you can buy an extra thin wrench for the job, it may cost you money or time spent on investigating options.
A large pipe wrench will work too, but will leave marks...

Yup jackstands, you need the wheel to be able to swing in and out when taking off and putting on the tie rids, even from the inside
