I think he's refering to the expanding-insulation foam for homes...I'm not sure that would look so great in your car. ack.
But Sears or The H.D. is probably a good place to find that "sheet" type foam.

for porsche level quality (and cost) i suggest http://www.efoamstore.com/ they make custom shaped foam to your specs, your ipod could even rest in luxury on "memory foam" if you so wish...

I like Mark's idea. Get some of that thick gray/black closed cell foam sheet you can buy at Sears Hardware. I think it is maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. It is intended to be cut out to hold sockets and such so they don't slide around in your tool box. I think that would be perfect for what I think you are doing.

Upholstery shop. I used to go to a place that had maybe 100 different sheet foams counting all the materials and thicknesses.
Got closed cell urethane rubberto use in my 928 when doing the carpet. Fixed the tunnel and made nice pads for the floors.

Ohh, I thought you meant the insulation foam.
For what you're looking for, go to a computer store and ask for an old laptop Hard drive box. It will have a precut foam holder for the hard drive that is a VERY close, if not perfect, match for the Ipod.
