Just to raise a potential point, did the previous shop really DO the work they charged you for and did they skimp by putting back on an old belt, knowing it was going to fail. Not unheard of by unscrupulous shop owners. I had one guy I used to trust on front end alignments attempt to sell me a set of inner tie rods on the wifeys car. Problem was, his guy didn't know I do the vast majority of my own wrenching and had just replaced the rod ends not 10 miles previously, hence the need for an alignment. Needless to say, I'll never ever go back there.

Back to your car, this really sounds like an old belt failure. Tooth shearing is the usual for old belts as the cracks develop down where the teeth join the belt. Past that, it's likely a roller.

Since it's an '83, I'm guessing at some point it was fitted with an update kit to use the later waterpump instead of the original early kind? The early pumps were problematic -IIRC they were missing a roller.

Good point Luis. The early pump didn't have the "ramp" part on it and an improperly tensioned belt (loose) could flap and the teeth hit each other and cause what you're described.

Yeah,it actually ate the belt not broke.I have replaced/updated the waterpump also.Actually, the previous incident was also teeth stripped(not broken belt-from a engine damage and financial standpoint it didn't matter whether it was broke or stripped but since it has happened twice it is the focal point of the repair this time. Also, the re-tensioning will be an item of awareness.

If I were you I wouldn't be driving a 944 anymore. Better yet, buy a new 500 dollar one every 6 months or so and drive it to the ground. So much cheaper!

I'm in no position to judge, but all this money you're spending could easily land you in a better car.
