The "Piston failure-caution, big ugly photo" is finally out of the car, on the engine stand with the oil pan off. I'm now going to need a machinist to evaluate the crank, rods, pistons and heads from the popped engine and the replacement engine sitting on the floor of the clubhouse. I'm in Austin, Tx and I can't find anyone I feel I can trust with my Porsche. If I have to ship it off I guess it really doesn't matter how far away it is. I need someone who knows 944's.
Also, I'm at a loss about the lifters. How can I evaluate the lifters from the blown engine and the replacement engine. Can these be bought new? I'm afraid to take them out of the head! The only thing I can come up with is to number them and put them in individual baggies.

sharkey, the 356 should go to http://www.competitioneng.com/ or Ollie's Machine- Santa Ana, CA 1-714-558-7334 both are porsche specific machine shops. (both specialize in air cooled.. but it wouldnt hurt to ask if they do water cooled as well. they are the best shops i know of, and come highly recomended by a lot of people)
do not send it to someone who is not familiar, and do not send it to a vw machine shop. the engines are similar, but the vw shops dont understand what the differences are and have a tendancy to aline bore the cases (porsche cases dont need it, and anything more than 2 under will be impossable to find in bearings). also vw shops have a tendancy to force guides in the heads, and realy screw up the intake bosses on the heads (read lots of $$$$ to fix). so have it done once and have it done right.

Fredricksburg. The clubhouse (no women or children please!) is actually between San Marcos and Seguin. I've heard about a shop in San Antonio but I can't even get them to return my calls. I'll keep you informed....

I don't have the name of the shop I have called in San Antonio, (it's at the office) but I know it wasn't Duff Engine Service. I'm actually @ 45 mins. from the north side of San Antonio. This would be a Cinderella story. I'll call them in the morning and Thanks!!
