Default VA/MD People - Inspection Question

On my "new" '83, I found the inspection sticker to be from VA, dated 1986. Does VA require yearly inspections? The car was bought from MD last fall, does MD require inspection stickers? Seems odd that the car hasn't been inspected since 1986, but has racked up over 100,000 miles since 1986...

Yes, VA requires yearly inspections. I'm pretty sure MD does too, but it might be every other year or something like that. Of course it's possible the car was just never reinspected and never caught either.

MD does not require stickers or yearly inspections, VA does. Car was most likely brought to MD before the '87 inspection in VA was due. MD owner just didn't remove the sticker

MD requires an inspection when the car is first registered to a new owner. After that, only inspection is for emissions every two years

From what I can gather from the paperwork in the car, it was purchased in NY in 1983, then in VA in 1986, then in MD in 2000. Seems very odd that it has never been updated since 1986. Does MD put anything on the car to indicate that the original inspection was performed?

MD has inspections but they are different than VA, MD has emissions every 2 yrs but only have a 1 time safety inspection in order to title and lisence in the state. VA has bi-annual emissions inspections as well as annual safety inspections. In VA once the car hits a certain age they become exempt from emissions but still need to pass safety. There is a loop hole if you wanna call it that in VA, the car can be titled in the state but not driven (lisenced). You still have to pay property tax on it if garaged in the state but no safety inspection or emission inspections are required. I guess that it would be hard to do 100K in your garage though.

Did you pull a carfax on it yet? If it went to another state or there was another sale involved that may clear some of that up for you.

Hope that helps,

Michael

I did not do a Carfax, since its a project, I'm not all that worried...just seems, well, like this car has an "interesting" background.

There is always someone around on the board to get them for you. In the 928 forum there is a guy that does them all the time, just do a search on "carfax" and take a look.

The father bought the car in 86 and sold it to the daughter in 2000. Md. requires no insp. sticker. 1 insp. for life of ownership. I tried to talk Tony (uranium235) into taking the s4 off my hands, but he is a die-hard 944fan. Best of luck in his new venture! Let me know how you make out with it Tony, as strange as it sounds i miss it already.
