because in theory if your max bid is what you are willing to pay for the item then the 50 people would have out bid you anyway so it doesnt matter. and in the meantime the seller gets a fair gauge of interest in his item.

To "Snipe" is to win. I always do it. No sense letting someone know you plan to invade, it would only allow them to build up the defenses. Most newer E-bayers only bid what they WANT to pay for an item, not what they would pay top dollar. It kind of sucks, but the only way to beat it is bid a truthful as-high-as-you-would-go bid, but sometimes that is tough to call. If you bid and lose at $200, are you going to kick yourself for not bidding $205? Then bid $205! What about $210? It never ends.

I always thought a good idea would be to not let an auction close until 10 minutes after the last bidder hit. Of course this is at the sellers discretion, but it could take some power away from the snipers and allow bidding wars to push up prices.

Man, I LOVE E-bay. I just spent $300 there tonight. Has anyone ever gotten fairly drunk and the next day gotten a bunch of bid-notice Emails, and thought..What did I buy last night????

Some gun auction sites work something like Dan P suggests- at anytime a bid is made, 15 minutes is automatically added to the auciton closing date/time. Supposed to make it work more like a live auction and defeat sniping. Sounds like a system most sellers would love and most buyers wouldn't.
