Default How much does a 951 motor weigh?

Here's the deal, driving to N.C. to pick up a 951 drivetrain from Ian this weekend, and was doing some quick #'s on if I'm going to kill my truck. The truck has a [EDIT: 1461lb] payload capacity. Here's what I'll be bringing:

2 adults (both small): 300lbs
1 951 transmission: 100lbs
1 951 torque tube: 60lbs
crapload o'tools: 200lbs
jack & stands: 150lbs
===================
total: 810lbs

I guess my question is....How much will the engine weigh?

i.e. when I add it in, will I be well over weight?

oh...btw...I'm getting the 'super-long-block'. i.e. block/head/turbo/exhaust/intercooler/wiring/hoses/dme/klr/etc.

I don't know exactly but I would say you will over 1,000 lbs with the engine, head, turbo, exhaust, intercooler, etc.

Not sure but I know that the NA motor I picked up was lifted into the back of my Suburban by 2 guys. So it can't weight that much. I would say you should be fine.

Short block I believe is 233 pounds or something like that, which means you're already over.

well I just looked it up & turns out payload is closer to 1400lbs as my truck is only 2wd, so not as bad as I thought.

Default 951 DRY Engine Weight

It depends on what ancillaries the motor includes. According to Porsche- the basic
8V 1983 944N/A motor weighs 368lbs, with flywheel, NOT including the power steering pump, clutch, pressure plate or bellhousing. On the exhaust, the cast headers are factored in. For the induction side- this figure includes the 944 N/A curved intake boot, throttle body and manifold. According to Porsche- the 951 powerplant is 39lbs more than the engine mentioned above. Weight gain of the turbo, plumbing, and related components(intercooler, piping, and cycling cooler, tubing, etc.) only adds a degree of protection for an otherwise powerful, lightweight engine. The spring-loaded clutch components and bellhousing figures are below:

944 N/A 225mm clutch, pressure-plate, T/O bearing, Bellhousing/sensors=24.6lbs
944 Turbo 240mm clutch, pressure-plate, T/O bearing, Bellhousing/DME=25.5lbs

Hmm...so I'll have to double-check the owners manual, but if I'm right at the 1400lb payload I should be ok then

1461 - 810 = 651 pounds. I would say it is under that.

It's around 450lbs including everything mentioned. If you consider it 500lbs, you'll stay on the safe side of things.
You'll be just fine, now go get that motor

Hi Dilberto,

Where exactly did you see this information from Porsche? I would be very interested in seeing more (e.g. weight of a 996 motor, etc.).

TIA.

Karl.

I weighed my engine when I had it hanging from the rafters. Turned out to be about 440lbs without fluids. It was a longblock+extras like alternator, power-steering-pump, headers, intake-manifold, turbo, etc.
