Default Sealing the dist. cap

I changed the cap and rotor on my S today. On the inside of the cap on the lower (bottom) surface was dirty, looked like some water had gotten in and the dirt was left after it dried.

I've had trouble with the car running very bad and almost dying in a downpour or really sloppy and wet snowy conditions.

So I sealed the cap with silicone on the inside lip, I don't see this causing any problems or is there a reason why the cap shouldn't be sealed? Other than the fact that it will be hard to remove next time.

I really couldn't believe how much of a difference the cap and rotor made in a short test drive and how much the idle smoothed, they really didn't look too bad inside but after 3 yrs. and 50K I guess they were due.

Plugs next but waiting for the Magnacores to arrive first.

You mean where the cap meets the cam housing? There should be a gasket on there. It's rather cheap ~$2 or something, I replace it every time I change the cap.

It was a special order from the dealer for me. A new one is 100% improvement, because the old one got brittle, and let the cap wiggle around a bit. I think I paid $7.95, but I could be wrong. It was adhesive backed, all you do is peel it off and stick it on.

You'll have to take off the old gasket with a screwdriver.

Bought mine from Paragon for a really good price, don't remember the exact price though.

Mine took a lot of varsol and a screwdriver to remove. I think it may have been original. I change caps every 45,000km's, so that's about 2 years, the gasket should come off pretty easily at 2 years, should just be getting rigid.

Re-read the thread. Not sure if there is a gasket on the 'S' models....

I would not seal it if the factory didn't. Your problem was an old cap.

Apparently the car just didn't like the Castrol 10/30 syn blend. I changed the oil again and used my usual winter mix of Castrol 3qt-10/30, 2 1/2 qt 20/50 both dino. and 1 qt Lucas and even on warm days I'm idling over 2 bars psi. I think that my gauge in the dash is bad because even at 20', cold start I don't show over 4 1/2 bars oil psi.

Even the first time that I changed the cap I didn't see any remnants of a gasket, but I've always had the trouble of the car pretty much dying out in really wet conditions, even with the last new cap. Even on really damp days the car idles like crap.

I was wondering if there may be sone reason (need for a vent?) why I shouldn't seal the cap to the dist.?

But then my wet problem may be from bad plug wires. I have a set of Magnacores on the way, and that may solve it.

I recenly put on some Kingsborne wires and they smoothed out my idle.

For winter I have 10/30 Mobil 1 and am idling around 1.5 bar. Anyway glad it wasn't the rod bearings for you.
