Default eVil Flywheel ate my Clutch!

The clutch on my N/A wore out, which was kindof suprising to me. It only had about 80k miles, and from what I heard, clutches can last 150k or more unless you launch from every stop. My clutch didn't get any extreme treatment, so I wasn't expecting it to wear so quickly.

Well I think I found out why...

(the metal shavings are from a stripped out pressure plate bolt)

I'd say about 2 lbs of clutch dust shook out of there. Started grinding the rivets...

I'm going to get the flywheel resurfaced, and obviously a new clutch kit. Hopefully the next one will last a tad longer than this one.

And next up, timing belt job. Should be easier with the engine like this already...

...then I've got some bodywork to do, including a brand new urethane front valence. (Someone took a bite out of the one on the car now)

Might as well get a "lightened" flywheel while you're at it.

The pitch of that car... your muffler must be sitting on the ground

Isn't it nice to work on an engine that is out of the car?
I'm pulling mine because it needs some pretty major work. Seems about 100x easier to do on an engine stand

Looks like the clutch wore out, and chewed up the flywheel. The clutch dust will build up inside the pressure plate and such, that is normal. 150k miles is pretty long for a clutch. You have to be rather nice to it to make the clutch last that long. I usually say 150k km's for a clutch is a normal life, which is almost 100k miles. If you've let the clutch do the work on downshifts and things like that, I can definately see a clutch failing in 80k miles. The clutch in my subaru has gone 320,000km's, of which about 100,000km's are in my posession, on it's original clutch. Just for comparison
