Somebody over on 924.org a while back was claiming the diesel motor out of an Audi 4000 (?) was pretty darn near a direct bolt in. I would love to see that and maybe do something along those lines with a tired old 924.

I agree with Deni about the AWD convertion, that would be very interesting

It was based on a Buick 215 aluminum V8 and IIRC it was first shoehorned into the MGB GT when British Leyland owned MG.

I believe there was somebody on Clark's garage that was racing me to make the first diesel powered 924/944. He was fitting a 1.6L IDI engine into his 924. He claimed it was a direct bolt-on to the torque tube, with the porsche clutch assembly mounted on the VW flywheel.
Never heard anything more from it though.

The 1.9L TDI PD fits wonderfully, it is a full 6" shorter than our engine, which is always a good thing, and it's about the same weight. With some minor tuning, they put out 150hp and 250lb/ft of torque. That would be an awesome car for a daily driver, plus it gets 40+mpg.

Chevy in a pcar is old hat. VW diesel turbo sounds WAY COOL!

Saw a 914 with a suby engine, may have been the 2.0 l turbo unit, nice job with that, btw. Also, if no one knew, the Subaru designs originated from a German auto company called "Lloyd". The company was one of three companies which part of Borgward Werke (Goliath/Hansa, Lloyd + Borgward). Subaru bought the blueprints when they went out of business in '62. Hmm, flat four, water-cooled, front-wheel drive? I have two Goliath trucks ('57 & '59) with these 1.1 litre engines, from Bremen....

Hmm...the Subaru stuff is actually what spurred the question. I wonder if the new STi motors would fit? I see they're going for about 3500 on eBay. 300 horses, low center of gravity, and better looks than an STi (the 944 body style, that is). Tempting!!

I know this wouldn't be "weird" exactly, but what about some of Porsche's other engines? Harry, I'm sure you would know what fits in what here...I really know squat about the 911 motors that have been used through Porsche's past. Have you seen anything along those lines before, like putting an air cooled engine in a 944?

Indeed!

Don't forget the same engine was also used to great effect in the TR8. A yummy car.

Want to see something real cool. Well, I'm working on an
adaptor plate now. Going to swap my 951 engine with an
Alfa V6 3L 24v engine & it's gonna be twin turbo. But you
guys will have to wait till the end of the year. This engine
has got real pedigree to it. The sound at wot will send shivers
down your spine. It's got the most soulful sound of any mass
produce engine to date.

Since the 944 was built at the Neckersulm Audi plant, part of it's soul is Audi, but one must remember, it is a Porsche. I was thinking something along the same lines for a 944NA engine swap but, sourcing Porsche four cylinder engines first, then any Audi/VW engines as a last resort.

Porsche engine options
- Porsche 968 3.0 litre, 240hp stock. Best option AND it's a Porsche four cylinder 944 upgrade!
- Porsche 944 S2
- Porsche 951 turbo engine, same (just buy a 951...)

Audi engine options
- Audi V6 30, 190hp stock. Tuned they sound glorious on full throttle, Stasis Racing has them dialed in.
- Audi //S4 V6 bi-turbo 265hp? stock. Might be too much due to intake runners, turbo, etc)
- NEW Audi //S4 V8, 340hp stock. Short, cam chains are in the rear.)
- Audi AAN 20v turbo 5cyl. 227hp stock, from 1992-95. I have one in my '95 //S6 and I'll measure tonight. These can be tuned to well over 380hp. The beauty of this engine is doesn't have balance shaft belts and I've NEVER heard of a timing belt failure with one. At 1920 rpms they put out 258ft lbs of torque - stock. Much heavier than an all alloy engine though.

VW engine options
- VR6 2.8 litre, or new 3.2 litre. Light, good hp stock, can be supercharged, etc. The sound of one is intoxicating...
- TDi 1.9ltr. What a great idea! These are solid little engines with loads of torque. AWESOME fuel mileage, bad spine tingling sound though...
- 1.8 turbo. Great 150hp stock. Can be tuned to big hps. Oil sudge problems. Could work.
- Passat 4Motion W8 ???

Any other Porsche/Audi/VW that I'm missing?

I've seen a 7mgte supra turbo in one. I'd really think of doing a 1.9TDI into a beetle in the future - you can do a ton to those engines.
