I have a '86 944 na and I have to pop it into first. It is acting like reverse you have to pop it into gear and if you don't you get a horrible grind.. does anybody know why it just startd doing this?

you can check the linkage on the top of the tranny for any play. A Rennlister on here before had an issue with the linkage and the whole works got disconnected causing him to loose all gears. If it seems tight, rule out the synchro. To replace one synchro would be pointless; replace them all and check that ring and pinion. It won't be cheap I'll tell you that. It's a lot cheaper to go and find a used 944 transmission in the wrecking yard. Good luck, keep us posted.

Hey;
You need to check the rear linkage for something loose or broken. Synchros don't just start making noise suddenly, unless you are a clod. They more normally wear over time and fail gradually.
Also pay attention to how your clutch is working. Hmmmm?
