My 87 944 phone dial rims are somewhat nasty looking without re-finighing them by painting how can I get that yellowish looking color back to oe ? and the water marks off ?

I tried every wheel cleaning product that was recomended by my dealer... none of them worked. I was told that the yellowing is the effect of brake dust on the top layers of paint and that it is too deep to clean.
SO, I stripped my wheels, and painted them... look like new except the color is SLIGHTLY darker.

I'd go for a powdercoat if you want something to last for a long time. They'll take your rims, sandblast them down to the pure unoxidized metal, spray em with tons of paint and then it gets baked on for an ultra hard ultra rugged finish. It's really not that expensive either, just dont take it to somebody that does really high end projects like prize winning bikes. Maybe NZ951 will sell us how much it cost him to pc his dials white.
If I end up with a ****ty pair of dials, I might consider doing a white pc, instead of getting some D90s.

Ummm it was free to coat them and anything I coat

I would think if you paid a shop to do it, it would be $200 ish.

I tried cleaning my yellowed rims up as well. Working with polishing compound improved things very modestly, but certainly wasn't worth the effort. Repainting them yourself is a lot of work and not much fun (don't ask me how I know -- they came out really well, though). If I had to do it over again (and I'm sure I will, eventually), I'd definitely get them professionally pc'd and be done with it.

Hey Wiz,

You have to stip the original clearcoat off to get rid of the yellow. It is a very tedious job.

Faithless,

Please only post when you have something to contribute. Please see above question by Wiz.

WTF does powdercoating have to do with his question.

Secondly, where do you get this idea that "tons" of paint is good. Powder coating is like any other paint , specifically, thick, ain't good. Yes, typically a powdercoated finish is several mils thicker that a single stage paint. This is the second time I have noticed that you have posted about "thick" or "tons" of paint.
I think it is misleading.

I have been having components powdercoated since the late 1980's.

I think it is great you are trying to learn all you can about 944's...................

However, IF YOU DON'T KNOW, DON'T POST!
