I met my parents for dinner tonight, went back out to my car, got in, tried to start it up, and it was just turning over. It wouldnt start. So I tried giving it a little gas, that dident help. My parents gave me a ride home, we grabbed some jumper cables, went back, and tried to start it again. Still was doing the same thing. The flap in the AFM is shuttering back and fourth when the gas is pressed.. is this normal when the car is starting? I need all the ideas I can get to get this car started up tomarow morning so its not sitting out in the snow through the big snow storm tomarow. Any advice would be great. Its got a brand new battery in it.. so that shouldnt be the problem. It was about 5 degrees out, so i dont know what kind of effect that has on it.
TIA
Jeff

Start with the basics- check for spark, fuel, DME relay etc, noid light on the injectors.. does the tach bounce while cranking?
You may want to check the speed/ref sensors to see if the connections are secure- maybe try wiggling them gently while someone else cranks it.
EDIT: Make sure the vacuum lines are secure- see if the "J" boot has a gaping hole..
Best of luck!

Does your tach bounce when you try and crank the car?
Can you hear the fuel pump pressurize after cranking?
Still running on the original DME relay?

Well unfortunatly I wasnt really thinking to check all this stuff when I was there, since it was so freezing cold out, so I dont really remember if the tach was bouncing. Yes i believe im still running on the original DME relay, The J boot seems to be fine. Anyone know about that AFM shuddering?

Alright, well, I think as of right now, my plan is going to be to go there tomarow, spray some ethor(SP?) and try that, if that doesnt work, Ill test for spark, ill check the relay... and if i cant figure it out from there, Ill have it towed, my baby cant sit out in the foot of snow

Well, went back this morning, tried the ethor, that didnt work, it felt like the cars battery was dead even though it was jumped. So I came home, called a tow truck, and Im on my way back there now with the keys. Its way to cold out to work on it in the parking lot, and with the snow storm coming, i dont want it sitting outside. The tow truck is charging me 100 dollars for 5 miles

Watch the hook up and make sure it's flatbedded. DO NOT let them tie down to the A-arms.
Cod weather is hard on electrics that may be marginal enough for normal operation in warmer/drier weather.
Best of luck!

Yep I think Ill take your advice stan with the AAA, and i watched him hook it up, it was a flat bed, and he just tied down the wheels. He said he had a 67 vette, he felt my pain.

If ether did not work while the car is cranking, check your spark by disconnecting a spark plug wire and sticking a screwdriver in it. Then place the screwdriver about 1 mm away from a ground point like your intake manifold and crank while checking for spark. If you place it right, you can see it yourself from the inside the car. The flapper is supposed to "shudder" while the engine is turning over. When you turn over the car, listen for compression if you know what I mean (not constant speed rotation of the engine due to compression). Good luck.

When you tried to jump start it how long were the cables hooked up for?
I had to jump mine once last winter, really cold out, and had to leave the cables hooked uo for like 10-15 min. to get enough charge in the battery to get a good crank.
The was also jumping off of a semi tractor.

Alright, I checked for spark, and it doesnt seem that I have spark. How hard is it to see? I had the lights off in the garage and I was looking really hard, but couldnt see it. (spark plug was taped to the intake manifold, i checked two of the four plugs and neither seemed to have spark). So I moved on to checking the DME relay, and I think I may have found out my problem...
I couldnt here my fuel tank pressurizing, nor was my tac bouncing when the car was cranking. So I pulled the relay out, and stuck a small piece of wood inbetween the two wire coils to complete the connection. (this is the updated 993 relay I found out) As soon as i plugged it in, the fuel tank started pressurizing, Again I tried to start the car up but that didnt work. The tach stil didnt bounce with the relay like that. Should I order a new relay and try that??
Anyone else have any other ideas? I guess if you guys dont think this is the problem ill move onto the distributor.
