Default Amp Placement

Any suggestions on where to hide an amp in one of these cars? I've tried under the dash but on the early dash / 924S cars the a/c stuff takes up all the room on the pasenger side (I haven't pulled the glove box yet to look behind there). There is room for the amp itself in the cubbies in back, but not enough for the wires that will come out of it. Spare tire well doesn't work unless I remove the spare. I'm getting ready to try under the drivers seat, but if that doesn't work the only place I can think of is behind the front seats on the floor.

Maybe this is the right time to make a replacement hatch cover so I can just put it back there without worrying about someone walking off with it?

I used some industrial expoxy to attach my amps to the rear window - really cool effect.

Why not under the passenger seat?
If you have a power driver's seat, I wouldn't count on there being enough room down there.

I mounted mine to my sub box in the hatch.

I don't have power seats in my car so there might be some room. If the battery tray leaks then I might wind up with a wet amp... that makes me a little nervous to put it under the passenger seat. Might as well have a look anyway. I'm wishing I had that rear compartment cover, it'd be easy then because nobody could see into the 'trunk.'

If the amp is small enough, mount it on the back of the rear seat.

mine fits perfectly inside the spare tire, in place of the air compressor, which got chucked into a cubby.

Just measured - it's too tall for under the seats and would poke up from behind the back seat (it'd be in plain sight anyway). With the spare would work - does yours fit completely inside the spare / rim? There isn't quite enough room for me to bolt it in the front part of the spare well and it's bigger around than the rim is, but it could sit loose inside there if I pad it. I never knew there was supposed to be a compressor in there! I guess my spare really isn't good for anything anyway so if all else fails I could just take that out.

Good point on the battery tray leaking. On all my 944's, the first thing I did was pulled the battery, and examined the tray. All were fine, so I no longer worry about that.

You could cut a piece of MDF to be a snug fit in the spare tire opening, and mount the amp to that, might help keep it from bouncing around?

yeah, mine fits fully inside of the spare, it was one of those moments where you go "Oh.... cool!" and decide that that was where it was meant to be. The amp is a US Acoustics USX2100. really nice amp for the money.

I'm interested in placing the amp much like you are Steve, very hidden. I was thinking about under the glove box too, guess not. I'd love to just rip off a ton of stuff and place it well inside of the car if there is enough room someplace to make that possible. Replacing the compressor sounds like the best option sofar. Scuba Steve can you post pics of your installation when you have completed it?

I wouldn't recommend under the passeger seat if at all possible. Mine is there at the moment and I will move it once I decide to replace. Although it fits, the first time someone gets in on the passenger side and tries adjusting the seat, it could cause problems. This is for an '83 NA.

I've done some more searching - inside the spare well would be a really hard fit if I want to keep a spare in there. Could always pack with foam but what if it moves and a hot wire contacts the spare rim or something. I'd only be able to drill holes for the lower side if I were to mount it because of the gas tank, and still I'm not sure if it'd be possible to get the spare out without moving the amp if I ever had to.

I think what I'm going to wind up doing is putting it behind the rear seat in the 'trunk' area. It won't be exposed there because I'll go ahead and make a cover to replace the one the car came with new. I've been meaning to make one out of some vynol and a couple of dowel rods for awhile now, and keeping the amp out of sight should be the motivation I need to finally get out and do it. The amp is an Eclipse EA3422 for what it's worth. Bright aluminum in color and not the easiest thing to keep hidden in a black interior.

how about in one of the side cubbies? in my previous 944 I built a slide-in/out amp board and mounted it in the passanger side rear cubby. It was a fairly small amp, but I think you could fit something rather large in there...

Thats what I'm talkin bout!

Does anybody know of any voids inside of the 944's body that would be large enough to place an amp, but may require some disassembly? How about behind the dash? Under the seats? are the holes for the rear speakers possibly large enough to slide it inside and mount it somewhere in there, or is there not enough room?
