Default OT: NJ speeding tickets

I have a question about NJ speed tickets.

My friend got a ticket on the NJ Turnpike for 82 in a 65. According to the back of the ticket exceeding the speed limit by 15-19MPH is a $102 penalty. Although it does say that if its in a 65zone it could be doubled. When he went online and punched the ticket code in it to their system it claims to be $180 - and according to their chart - a 4 point offense.

Now, he doesn't live in NJ and doesn't really want to drive 200 miles for the court appearance but.. my question is.. is it worth it? 4 points sounds like a lot.. and im guessing they automatically reduce the penalty $$ by half if you simply show up and have a clean record. Sure the money saved will equal the gas money spent but... who knows.. maybe NJ is notorious for giving out easily "beatable" tickets?

Beats me, I was just curious and figured I would ask, since I know we have many NJ people here, as well as plenty speeders here hehe.

I've gotten many a ticket here in NJ, and if the points transfer, the killer is the insurance. I got a similiar ticket and my insurance tripled-the $180 wasn't bad...the insurance however....good luck with it.

What I did when I got that same ticket on the Garden State pkwy: Plead not guilty. Make the 200 mile trip, see the prosecuter before the "trial", and you usually wind up with a reduced (2-points) ticket. The fine stays the same though. Insurance doesnt care about 2 points (unless your friend has more points as well?).

Or, he pays the ticket, and pays a ton in insurance for 3 years.

I'd get an attorney and fight it. I've had 12 tickets (speeding) in the last 5 years and got all of them dismissed. Usually it takes a year for a ticket to go to court in Dallas County, so by the time it goes to trial, either the cop doesn't show for trial (it's on his day off with no extra pay) or the prosecutor has bigger things to do. The cost is around the same as the fine but it stays off your record.

For the record, there was only one ticket in the Porsche, the rest were in my wife 850 T5 or my truck.

Simon,
Andy has it right. If he wants a lawyer I will gladly refer him to someone to take his money.

Lets see how good it looks after tomorrows snowfall. Very stealthy with the white salt all over it.

With the BMW M3 wheels I have on it with the snows, the kidney grill, and the fact it doesnt say pontiac anywhere on the car it is very stealth!

He is a college student, PCA member that autocrosses occasionally. Give him a break, he isn't trying to sell stuff, and always contributed positively AND is asking a question to help someone else out.

I do get pissed when a non member tries to make money off the board, but the primary function of board as far as I understand it is for people to get answers to questions.

lol.. love you too sweanders. i wonder how many people on rennlist have a prejudice against people who don't have a membership... hmm... im guessing a lot (just from seeing what happens to most non-member questions, even people with <100 posts).

lately i haven't even been posting that much. i used to post all the time when i bought the car but now i just live by the "if you don't read rennlist then you can't know the symptoms of any problems so therefore you don't have any problems" philosophy - and only check in here sometimes.

thanks for sticking up for me Tom - in the end i really am just a cheapass.
..and thanks everyone for the tips. sounds like any way you slice it - its a pain in the ***

I don't care if people post OT in the OT forum and I don't care if people don't want to join.

OTHO the purpose of the OT forum is to not have OT posts on tech forums so the only way for you to ever have done this correct is to either not have started this thread or having been a member and started it in OT.

What is hard to understand?
