Does anyone know the weight of a 2.5 na engine. I am trying to determine the effect of the additional mass of four more pistons and need to know the starting point. Your input greatly appreciated.

are you thinking about dropping a crate 350 in? definetly cheaper parts, but it just won't be all porsche.

Only if you swear it's only going to be a 928 engine. . .

I thought the LT-1 V8 was actually lighter than a 944 engine???
It's all aluminum right??

There are variations, most are cast iron blocks. The vette motors are four bolt mains cast iron block with aluminum heads. The 350 is a narrow V and will fit nicely. Plenty of parts and the LT1 is a very sophisticated engine putting out gobs of power and torque. From what I've read on the hybrid board one can light up the tires in 3rd with two thirds throttle. A 951 would be nice but I have an NA with a bad clutch and other engine issues so this is a real option.

I do not think the 225 some odd horses, the initial cost of a good motor, and the expensive parts are worth the effort of fitting a 928 motor into anything.

The purpose of the Chevy swap is to make your 944 more powerful, less prone to catastrophic failure, and less expensive to maintain. All traits that would not come with a 928 swap.

I have looked closely at doing both of these procedures, opted for neither, but the Chevy makes more sense if this kind of thing is your bag.

I say, if it tickles your fancy, do it.

I just wanted to chime in and say what a great forum this is. Instead of the usual flaming you see on other forums people actually read the initial post in its entirety before reacting. You guys make Rennlist what it is; a reasonable, useful, pleasant place to discuss our cars. Rennlist is one of the few Porsche venues where people have a realistic rather than elitist view on our cars and their purpose. Thanks.

Yes, a V8 swap done correctly is a beautiful thing. I currently have my eye on a poor 944 that may get a new lease on life through such a swap. This subject has always interested me.

Thanks for the input folks. I wonder how much a 2.5 weighs though. So far what Iv'e read is the weight bias only changes by 5% with the 350 conversion. I did find the weight range for the V8 and I'm somewhat skeptical about the 5%. Thats why I'm curious if anyone knows the weight of the 4 banger.

I think it's around 380 lbs. I checked the shop manual a while back and posted but don't remember the exact number anymore.

The later 32V 928 engines built correctly can put down 500+ h.p. easily. The problem (as I understand it) is that it's a bit too wide for the stock 944 engine bay and some modification to the inner fenders is required. That intrigues me a lot more than the Chevy hybrid as it keeps the car 100% Porsche and could likely retain other things like the power brakes. Just my $0.02. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

I also believe the 928 engine is so much longer, that the whole front end has to be modified. Somebody did it with a tubular chassis, but I don't think it's ever been done with a normal 944.

“From what I've read on the hybrid board one can light up the tires in 3rd with two thirds throttle.”

On ice, snow or in rain maybe. On dry asphalt (~1.0 friction coefficient) that would correspond to at least 488 RWTQ (see my post here ), but surely a little bragging doesn’t hurt.

According to a source of mine the 2.5 8v engine weighs 166kg or 366lb's not sure if thats dry or wet. Hope this helps.
