De-Chipping an early 944 DME
How easy is it to de-chip an early 944 dme, I think i found one for my 944, but it is chipped with a 7k rpm revlimiter, which I don't really like. I am waiting to find out what kind of chip, but I was curious if this is possible...
thanks!

Depends upon who "chipped" the early DME to begin with. Contrary to popular myth, "chipping" and early DME by removing the soldered-on ROMs and installing a socket for a single removable chip doesn't upgrade the box to use the later chips. The removable chip is simply the same early DME chip image with modified maps; it doesn't have the same map locations or values as the later DMEs. So, you can't just plug in a later DME chip, even a stock one, into an early "chipped" DME to restore it back to stock. You have two options:
1. go back to chip-manufacturer and have new chip programmed with 6500rpm redline
2. remove chip & socket and solder original ROM chips back onto circuit board.

Okay, got ya, I think that will 3 different DME's before me and alittle work I may be able to work something out with this. Might sell the chip and replace it with a better one, with a stock rev limiter. hmmmm, I haven't decided, if the dme has been upgraded to take a modified chip, like it has, is the modification the same for all aftermarkrt chips, if i take this one off will another one work?

No, different outfits throughout the years have employed different methods for converting the early DME into socketed chips. Each implementation is different so you have to stick with the same manufacturer. If you want to send me the chip from the modified DME, I can take a look at it to see if I can't reprogram just the redline for you.
