951 not interference engine?
My just finished beautiful guards red '83 fell victim to the SoCal rain-swept freeways and stupidity last Friday night. Some clown in a new Accord was racing along in the car pool lane (alone), cel fone to ear, hit a puddle, hydroplaned into the center divider, and went into a spin across the freeway until he slammed into the Porsche's rear end. Hit hard enough to buckle up the passenger rear and seal the door, so I'm sure the rail is involved and, with an '83, this is of course a total.
Anyhow, depending on the insurance settlement, I might opt for a turbo replacement I've always wanted- which brings me to the simple question that I'm sure a listee can answer. I've read someplace that the turbo engine, due to thicker head depth for lower compression, is not an interference engine like the N/A. Can anyone confirm this, or have I heard a Porsche urban legend?

From: Central Illinois. Cornfields a plenty.
incorrect. all are interference engines. Get a PPI before you buy your "new" 951.
If it were me i'd think about an 86 (fuchs) or an 89 (refinement).
Sorry to hear of your loss, but Boost will prevail. Good Luck!

All 944/968 models are interference engines......the differences between the 8v and the Turbo is/are in the clyinder head (valves, springs etc) and pistons with regards to the engine (and the turbo, the engine mount, and various other components).

Common myth that the 951 is not an interference engine due to the dished pistons, but lots of pictures have been posted here in the past to show that the valves visit the pistons pretty hard. Unfortunate, but true ... :-(

Re: parting of the '83: yes, I probably will be parting it out, however I have to deal with the other guy's insurance co. (Allstate) first, they haven't looked at it yet. Steve/Jeff- I'll let you know, I'm in Montclair, between Ontario/Pomona. Steve, can't help with the cookie cutter, it has phone dials/new tires. Interior is black, newly covered manual sport seats. Engine is 85.5, reportedly around 60,000 miles on it. New clutch, belts, water pump. Nice front end sheet metal/valance.

That urban-legend is perpetuated by another forum that has incorrect info. Here's a picture (again) of what happens to the pistons when a timing-belt breaks...
The sodium-filled exhaust valves are about $175 each in addition to the $1500-1800 in labor to pull the head , replace the valves and re-install everything. Add $15 for new timing-belt.
We're going to be offering some modified pistons with valve-reliefs cut out for a non-interefence fit. Should have some photos to show in a little bit.
