Default Got some news from the shop today...

Im going to need a new headlight motor, they want to charge almost 450 to install one but i think i can do it myself. I found a used motor on ebay for $25. Is there a write up on how to install one? Any tricks? Anyone care to guide me?
They also told me that the front seals are leaking so i went ahead and had them change those. He said it would only be a extra 300 because he is already in there VS almost 1000 if i come back. Some of the prices he gave me was rediculace. The hood strut estimate was almost humorous. I understand thats how they make their living but i think ill take 20 min of my own time and install the struts.

Thats Euromotorworks for ya...When I was new in town and was just calling around feeling out the 80s Porsche vibe they refused business because they wouldnt install parts unless sourced and bought through them. Screw that - not everything requires a new part and their markup.

I do it myself, make others help (hahaha - thats you Mike), or take it to Farmer.

Sam its insane, I already had a PPI done on the car but he checked it all over to see what else it needed. Most of this stuff is minor things i can do in the garage. Heres a list of things they sudgested to fix, some of it i ok and the other stuff i passed on:

Replace leaking oil pressure switch $197 OK
Oil Chane $62 OK
Trans oil change $57 OK
Engine mounts $700 Pass
Replace front engine seals $335 OK
Front Brake pads $230 Pass
Rear Pads $260 Pass
Flush and renew brake fluid $92 Pass
Replace battery $126 Pass
Replace hood shocks $93 Pass
Replace rear hatch shocks $159 Pass
Clean, lubricate and adjust rear left hatch latch(sticks) $61 Pass
Replace hazard switch (sticks) 156 Pass
Replace rear brake light assembly $197 Pass
License plate light bulbs $30 Pass
PassReplace right front sway bar bushing $101 OK
Replace spark plugs $71 Pass
Replace TB, WP, TS and rollers $1486 OK

I checked paragon and pelican and i can get the shocks, spark plugs, air filter, bulbs and a couple other small items for less then $70, and i dont mind spending 45 min changing it myself. The rear hatch latch just needs a little lubrication. And for the brake light assembly, i bought a pair yesterday on ebay for $31 from a 86 turbo in great condition. Like i said i understand thats how they stay in business but man 160 for rear hatch shocks?
Anyway, cant wait to get it.

$61 to LUBRICATE the rear hatch latch? That should be included in an oil change, or any job over $150. Brade pad estimates aren't rediculous though, if they included the sensors.

Battery should be $80 - Installation SHOULD be free.
Flushing brake system seems reasonable.
Spark plugs should be closer to $40.

Nearly $500 for the brake job - isn't that out of line? I picked up a set of pads for both for about $60 and should be able to do the install easily.... Are brakes just hard to do on our cars? (I've never done a brake job, but how hard can it be in an early car?)

$71 for plugs is high. They are probably only quoting $3.00 plugs, anyway. I just dropped in Bosch +4 Platinums for about $24.00.

The hood struts are good IF you have a partner. I did them myself and the timing was horrible. Get somebody to put the pin in for you. Trust me. I am fairly strong 6'1 190 and those struts are pretty hard to depress. You can get them at Paragon pretty cheap

Brake pads are easy to do on 951s. They're really no different than a typical pad job...aside from the superior calipers. The engine mounts are a pain, but for me, a $700 bill to change them is more painful. That's what it really comes down to. It looks like you passed on the right things Antonio. I hope we get a couple of clear days for you to get out and enjoy driving it.

quat2nv - We've arranged a couple of GTGs last year. Keep an eye on the boards for more when the ground thaws...

A shop will quote an hour to install new pads.
Removing caliper, compressing pistons, Anti squeel shims, Pounding the pins in and out, etc.

1 hour @ $120 per + $110 or so for pads isn't too bad.

Have somebody come over and buy them a beer - you will save a lot of money.

Uhm, 93 bucks for hood shocks?! let see, they're about 25 dollars on ebay...plus 10 minutes labor, at a prorated flat hourly of 78 dollars, comes out to 38. I know the hourly charge could be different from one place to the next, but sheesh.

Antonio....

Bob Farmer. 'Nuff said. Don't get an estimate from him on the stuff you're already having Terry do... b/c you'll get sick at how much money you spent over what Bob would've charged.

If you have all the parts for the stuff listed above and drove the car here we could probably take care of all of it in one weekend as a SOW project and save you all the labor cost.
